The concept of entrepreneurship is currently widely understood — even the notion of nurse entrepreneurship has recently gained acceptance. However, nurse intrapreneurship receives little attention, and the nurturing of nurse intrapreneurs should be a central focus for organizations seeking innovative growth in a shifting healthcare landscape. Intrapreneurs are seen as employees who readily take "ownership" of their work; they naturally think and act innovatively.

Navigate Nursing
Do you often feel tired or lack energy while “on the clock”? Traditional eight-hour workdays have long been a thing of the past for nurses as the condensed model of twelve-hour shifts has been embraced.
When surveyed about a condensed workweek, nurses continually report high levels of satisfaction, as they believe it improves their work-life balance. However, despite the popularity of the condensed workweek, the unpredictability of actual shift lengths often results in nurses putting in unplanned overtime beyond their scheduled week—which leads to burnout.

Rwanda's health system has seen a lot of progress when it comes to preventing and controlling hospital-acquired infections. Most district hospitals now have IPC committees in place and follow IPC protocols. However, some of these hospitals struggle to maintain and to apply some of these protocols due to lack of resources and especially lack of capacity. That makes capacity development for the medical and non-medical staff in the form of regular and inclusive trainings a key priority, both at the district hospital level and then, increasingly also, in the health centers which serve the majority of the country's population.

Sixty percent of new nurses quit their first job within the first six months due to the behavior of their co-workers, and nearly 50 percent of nurses believe that they will experience bullying at some time in their careers, according to research presented in a new e-book from Aurora, Colorado-based American Sentinel University.

Collectively, the clinical medicine and public health communities have demonstrated to governments and their populations that public health programs and interventions are critical to reducing infectious and chronic diseases. However, these investments by governments and private healthcare organizations are generally unrecognized by the public. In recent years, Western governments have shifted much of their attention toward personalized or precision medicine.

The prevalence of obesity among adults in the U.S. passed 30 percent for this first time ever last year, according to new numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
That 30.4 percent figure is up from 29.8 percent in 2014. Obesity was defined as a body mass index of 30 kg/m2 or more. The latest numbers, posted on the CDC website, were taken from an early release of findings from January to September of the National Health Interview Survey.

Medical personnel know attitude, tone and body language are key to patient satisfaction. I recently had the pleasure of visiting a practice where the atmosphere was great, but one thing killed the experience: document errors. After receiving one of their forms, I immediately noticed that HIPAA was spelled incorrectly as "HIPPA," which automatically made me think HIPPA-potomus. Although it was funny at the moment, I began to question the professionalism of this practice.

As healthcare shifts to focus more on outcomes and value, hospitals increasingly are looking to bring clinical experts onto their leadership teams to help navigate the change. And yet, relatively few registered nurses fill the title of chief executive, NewsWorks.org points out.
The online news site talked to a handful of nurse execs and experts about why so few RNs fill hospitals’ top positions. Gender may, perhaps, be one reason, with female nurses being forced to set their careers aside to care for family, one CEO tells NewsWorks.

A longtime discussion on how advanced practice nurses, such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants, could impact these shortages and improve access for health care consumers is seeing renewed debate this year in the state legislature.
While some argue that regulations on these providers should allow them to practice more autonomously, others say that could be dangerous for patients.

Concussions are prevalent at all levels of sports, often stalling or ending the athletic careers of professional athletes and school-age children alike. The injuries are widespread in the military, too, causing the branches to lose the services of valuable trained recruits. It seems as though an entire industry has popped up around the affliction, exploring causes, prevention and cures. That doesn't mean there's a consensus on any aspect of concussions, though.

Nurse leaders are increasingly common in hospitals, but still a relative novelty at the CEO's desk, and this rarity may tie into both nurse training and the proportion of the field who are women, according to Newsworks.
The registered nursing field is overwhelmingly female, presenting many of the same social obstacles to advancement as other professions, according to Kelly Doyle, CEO of Rothman Orthopedic Specialty Hospital in the suburbs of Philadelphia.
