What will a third vaccine mean for equitable access to immunizations in California?
CHCF
The FDA has approved Johnson & Johnson’s application for emergency authorization to distribute a new vaccine that blocked COVID-19 infections for 73% of people in U.S. clinical trials and prevented either hospitalization or death for 86%. This will be the first single-dose COVID-19 vaccine available to Americans, as well as the first one that does not require storage at ultra-low temperatures.

#ThisIsOurShot — For a COVID-free world
ANA\California
Scientific innovation has led to the discovery of vaccines that are highly effective at preventing illness from COVID-19. However, targeted disinformation paired with decades of structural inequality and mistrust in traditional institutions have contributed to the rise of vaccine hesitancy, particularly among communities of color. This threatens our future.
Help us by elevating the voices of healthcare heroes to build trust in vaccinations.

Some shifts of focus on State COVID-19 legislation (National map)
State Net
As of the end of January, states had introduced over 2,000 COVID-19-related measures, according to State Net’s legislative tracking system. That’s roughly half the number introduced in all of 2020, although states didn’t really start taking action on the coronavirus last year until March, and many states suspended their sessions or ended them early. This is also the first year of a biennium, when state legislatures tend to introduce more bills.

Code Blue resuscitation events have errors that happen 25% to 40% of the time. Eliminating these errors through better guideline adherence could save thousands of lives per year (American Heart Association’s Resuscitation Journal). Equally as crucial as well-established care guidelines are capturing the care provided to cardiac arrest patients. Ensuring that the event is well documented and that the documentation is immediately available for post-arrest patient care is essential. A tablet-based documentation solution provides an exceptionally intuitive, easy to use, and clinically designed interface to improve timing errors during code blue events. Telehealth, RPM programs can benefit greatly from a nurse's perspective
mHealth Intelligence
When the Blessing Health System recently launched a remote patient monitoring program to provide care for newly-discharged COVID-19 patients, officials were quick to point out that the platform would allow patients to recover more quickly and comfortably at home.
Often unsaid but just as important is that these platforms also make things better and easier for the care providers at the other end of the technology — specifically, the nurses.

Prioritizing oldest for COVID-19 vaccines saves more lives, years of life
University of California - Berkeley via Medical Xpress
Challenging the idea that older people with shorter life expectancies should rank lower in coronavirus immunization efforts, new UC Berkeley research shows that giving vaccine priority to those most at risk of dying from COVID-19 will save the maximum number of lives, and their potential or future years of life.

Survey: Black people more likely to adhere to public health guidelines due to disparities
News-Medical
America's stark racial disparities in healthcare have been exposed by COVID-19, but a new study from Michigan State University suggests that Black individuals are more likely than conservative white people to adhere to public health standards due to those disparities.
The study, published in the Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities, used data from MSU's State of the State Survey that was captured during the initial COVID-19 outbreak from a representative group of 800 adults in Michigan.

Just published: Compilation of research on PFAS in the environment
Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry via EurekAlert!
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are a class of man-made chemical compounds and a current, emerging concern to environmental health. PFAS substances have unique characteristics — resistance to heat, water, oil and stains — that make them useful in a variety of industrial applications and popular in consumer goods. Many PFAS are stable and long-lasting in the environment, acquiring the name "forever chemicals." Industrial use of some of these compounds has been halted; however, many derivatives are still in commerce and more are under development. PFAS are now found in many compartments of the environment.
In order to manage PFAs in the environment, significant research has been directed at understanding their sources, fate and transport in the environment, and their potential effects on humans and wildlife. Recently, Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry published a special issue dedicated to PFAS with 32 articles, providing a valuable summarization of risk assessment approaches for PFAS, which are needed for environmental managers and regulatory bodies to set appropriate drinking water standards and health advisory guidelines.
