A recent study published in PLOS One showed that the clinician-patient relationship has an effect on healthcare outcomes. There's no denying that clinicians have a high-stress job atmosphere, but that shouldn't take away from the bedside manner given to patients. Whether you're on the phone or in person, your tone, mannerisms and appearance all take a toll on the patient. That said, it can also take a toll on your professional career.

When you head to the emergency room, you almost expect stress — the long waits, the hubbub of other patients and the endless, seemingly discombobulated stream of doctors and nurses.
But for patients with autism, a neurological disorder that affects communication and can make people sensitive to stimulation, that stress can be so overwhelming that it undermines their ability to get the treatment they need.

Tears build behind your eyes. Your mind plays over and over how much you want to turn and run, but you can’t. No matter what, you have to keep going because you are strong and people are relying on you. How can you endure it, though, when one part of you wants to scream and one part of you wants to break down and sob? You can do neither, and instead, you hold yourself as taut as a wire over the Grand Canyon.

To hear a patient's heart, doctors used to just put an ear up to a patient's chest and listen. Then, in 1816, things changed. Lore has it that 35-year-old Paris physician Rene Laennec was caring for a young woman who was apparently plump, with a bad heart and large breasts. Dr. George Davis, an obstetrician at East Tennessee State University who collects vintage stethoscopes, said the young Dr. Laennec didn't feel comfortable pressing his ear to the woman's bosom.

Five Latin American countries with Zika epidemics — Brazil, El Salvador, Venezuela, Colombia and Suriname — have reported increases in Guillain-Barre syndrome. Until now, however, clinicians didn't have scientific evidence showing the virus actually triggers the condition.

Older Americans are not unaware when it comes to the potential impacts of technology on their health. In fact, they actually believe technology has a strong case to make for improving their lives. A new survey shows that the majority of seniors are "eager and willing" to improve their health. Perhaps what surprised researchers most is that older generations truly do wish to use and experience the benefits of technology in regard to their health

Heart attacks are a major cause of illness and death in the United States. According to 2013 Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates, about 116,793 people die of a heart attack every year in the United States. With this in mind, substantial efforts have been made to speed up the diagnosis of heart attack. One example of these efforts is the continued advancements in lab testing technology that recently led to the development of a much more sensitive and precise test for measuring heart proteins, such as cardiac enzymes or troponin, released into the bloodstream.

Although many pediatric patients undergo tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (T&A) in ambulatory settings, an inpatient setting may be safer for younger children who are at higher risk of complications, according to research published in online in JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery.
Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of data for children undergoing T&A in hospitals (18,622 patients; mean age, 5.4 years) and ambulatory settings, including hospital-based facilities (HBFs) and free-standing facilities (FSFs) (96,592 patients; mean age, 7.6 years). Rates of airway, respiratory and cardiovascular complications were measured.
