California State Assembly Committee on Business and Professions
The California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) will be participating in the BRN Joint Sunset Hearing on March 12, 2021. Each year, the Assembly Business and Professions Committee and the Senate Business, Professions, and Economic Development Committee hold joint sunset review oversight hearings to review the boards and bureaus under the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA). Code Blue resuscitation events have errors that happen 25% to 40% of the time. Eliminating these errors through better guideline adherence could save thousands of lives per year (American Heart Association’s Resuscitation Journal). Equally as crucial as well-established care guidelines are capturing the care provided to cardiac arrest patients. Ensuring that the event is well documented and that the documentation is immediately available for post-arrest patient care is essential. A tablet-based documentation solution provides an exceptionally intuitive, easy to use, and clinically designed interface to improve timing errors during code blue events. The Los Angeles Times has just endorsed SB 380
Los Angeles Times
Eggman's bill would make other improvements to the End of Life Option Act, such as requiring healthcare systems to provide information about the law to patients even if they don't participate and prohibiting them from gagging their doctors from talking about the law with patients. But most notably, the bill would make the law permanent. Otherwise, it would end on Dec. 31, 2025.

4 unspoken truths about nurses, PTSD and the pandemic
Nurse.org
The seven PM applause has long faded. The word “hero,” along with the faces of nurses, is no longer used in commercials flooding our televisions. Thank you dinners and notes aren’t flooding the hospitals. COVID vaccine numbers are slowly starting to rise across the country and Americans are starting to remember what the world looked like before the pandemic, but the truth is that the devastating effects of the novel coronavirus continue to ravage the world, and the number of individuals that have succumbed to the disease is astounding.
Nurses fighting on the front lines have been battling COVID-19 for a year, but the true effects will be long lasting. The impact of the coronavirus on the nation has been unprecedented, and a similar battle is being fought by nurses — for their mental health .

How to fight misconceptions about COVID-19 vaccines
Virginia Commonwealth University via Medical Xpress
While approval of COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna and now Johnson & Johnson comes as a beacon of hope, the government's rollout of these vaccines has been slower than expected. And many people, for a variety of reasons, are now contemplating whether they want to get vaccinated. A recent poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that one in three Americans said they would not get a COVID-19 vaccine. That type of hesitancy could hurt the chances of stopping the spread of the disease, which leading infectious disease scientists—including Anthony Fauci, M.D.—say can't happen without 70 to 85 percent of the U.S. population getting inoculated.

Increased vaccine supply is a crucial step in eliminating the burden on nurses
FierceHealthcare
Vaccine distribution has dominated headlines since the new year—and rightfully so. We are now closer than ever to seeing the end of this pandemic. Much-needed relief for our nation’s hospital workers—especially nurses—is finally in sight, but we must be careful not to underestimate the amount of effort still needed to deliver hundreds of millions of vaccines over the next few months. As vaccination efforts ramp up and inevitably evolve, nurses and other healthcare providers will require thoughtful support to combat burnout that has been building for over a year.

Tens of thousands of nurses have met the increasing demand caused by the pandemic by traveling and accepting short contracts at hospitals that need them most.

Top US health official says not time to end COVID-19 curbs
Medical Xpress
A top US health official warned March 3 that measures to stop the spread of COVID-19 had to stay in place if the pandemic is to be beaten, after Texas dropped its mask-wearing mandate. The United States has recorded over 500,000 deaths from the coronavirus, but has recently made progress with its vaccination plan, and some states are easing controls—triggering alarm from health experts and the federal government.

Fine particulate matter from wildfire smoke more harmful than pollution from other sources
University of California - San Diego via EurekAlert!
Researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego examining 14 years of hospital admissions data conclude that the fine particles in wildfire smoke can be several times more harmful to human respiratory health than particulate matter from other sources such as car exhaust. While this distinction has been previously identified in laboratory experiments, the new study confirms it at the population level.
