Health Heroes launch #ThisIsOurShot campaign to promote COVID-19 vaccines, fight misinformation
Primary Care Collaborative
Tens of thousands of healthcare providers have united with other frontline workers and more than two dozen state and national organizations to launch #ThisIsOurShot, a campaign to build trust in COVID vaccines. As the nation’s vaccine supply increases, getting accurate information to those considering vaccination can help achieve herd immunity as quickly as possible. “Watching someone you know get vaccinated first makes you feel more comfortable getting vaccinated yourself. That’s powerful!” said Dr. Hussain Lalani, a Dallas-based internal medicine resident and co-founder of #ThisIsOurShot. “But we also know that misinformation is circulating online and failing to combat it can be lethal. #ThisIsOurShot is built on the premise that getting shots in arms is a team activity and we all have a role to play.”

Code Blue resuscitation events have errors that happen 25% to 40% of the time. Eliminating these errors through better guideline adherence could save thousands of lives per year (American Heart Association’s Resuscitation Journal). Equally as crucial as well-established care guidelines are capturing the care provided to cardiac arrest patients. Ensuring that the event is well documented and that the documentation is immediately available for post-arrest patient care is essential. A tablet-based documentation solution provides an exceptionally intuitive, easy to use, and clinically designed interface to improve timing errors during code blue events. COVID breath-testing — could it be next? Research says yes
University of Canterbury via Phys.org
Anyone who's experienced a sharp swab up the nose and a tense, isolated wait for results will surely be interested in a pain-free COVID test with a speedy result delivered in minutes, not days.
A new study led by University of Canterbury researchers at the Biomolecular Interaction Centre, along with Callaghan Innovation's Protein Science and Engineering team and MacDiarmid Institute researchers from Massey University, has shown it may be possible to detect COVID-19 in as little as five minutes, thanks to a simple breath test.

Task force: Start lung cancer screening at age 50 years, 20 pack-years of smoking
Healio
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force issued its final guidance on lung cancer screening, lowering the age to start screening to 50 years and the required smoking history to 20 pack-years. As an update to its 2013 guidance — which called for screening starting at age 55 years for those with at least a 30 pack-year smoking history — the USPSTF now recommends annual screening with low-dose CT for those aged 50 to 80 years and a 20 pack-year smoking history who currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years, in accordance with draft guidance issued in July. The task force also recommends screening cessation once a person has not smoked for 15 years or develops a health condition that limits their life expectancy or prevents them from undergoing lung surgery.

Global battle against antibiotic resistance requires tailored solutions
Radboud University Medical Center via EurekAlert!
The global battle against antibiotic resistance can only succeed if local contexts are taken into account. "A tailored approach is needed in each country," says Heiman Wertheim of Radboud University Medical Center. "There is no 'one-size-fits-all' solution." This was the main finding of a study on antibiotic resistance in African and Asian countries funded by the British Wellcome Trust. Wertheim is the lead investigator of a large group of international researchers who recently published an article on this study in The Lancet Global Health.

Heart attack diagnosis missed in women more often than in men
European Society of Cardiology via EurekAlert!
Chest pain is misdiagnosed in women more frequently than in men, according to research presented at ESC Acute CardioVascular Care 2021, an online scientific congress of the European Society of Cardiology. The study also found that women with chest pain were more likely than men to wait over 12 hours before seeking medical help.
"Our findings suggest a gender gap in the first evaluation of chest pain, with the likelihood of heart attack being underestimated in women," said study author Dr. Gemma Martinez-Nadal of the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, Spain. "The low suspicion of heart attack occurs in both women themselves and in physicians, leading to higher risks of late diagnosis and misdiagnosis."

Doing so would have implications for government funding towards eating disorder research and healthcare, researchers noted.

Swallowable capsule-camera instead of endoscopy: Now in patients
Medscape
A miniature camera the size of a capsule that is swallowed and that then transmits images of the inside of the gut can reveal cancer and gastrointestinal diseases. The device, which will be studied in a trial conducted by the National Health Service in England, is used by patients at home as a substitute for endoscopy.
"What sounds like sci-fi is now becoming a reality," said Sir Simon Stevens, chief executive of NHS England. "These minute cameras pass through your body [and] they take two pictures per second checking for signs of cancer and other conditions like Crohn's disease."
