VaxForce: New volunteer platform connecting nurses with COVID-19 vaccination efforts across California
ANA\C

The La Famiglia Community Clinic had the vaccines but not the nurses and healthcare providers to deliver them. Led by VaxForce, a brand new volunteer platform connecting nurses with COVID-19 vaccination efforts across California — particularly for under-served communities — ANA\California, HealthImpact, California Organization of Associate Degree Nursing (COADN), Association of California Nurse Leaders (ACNL), and California Association of Nurse Anesthetists (CANA) helped coordinate the staff and resources needed to vaccinate 315 people from the community, including 80 farm workers who were given transportation to the site.

Advisory Board
One year out from the start of the pandemic, the American Nurses Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the American Nurses Association, surveyed more than 20,000 nurses to learn how they are faring. While some of the findings paint a bleak picture — with more than 50% of respondents saying they feel exhausted, and nearly a quarter saying they are depressed — the survey identified bright spots of resiliency and hope as well.

Based on review of recent evidence, CDC recommends a single 500 mg intramuscular dose of ceftriaxone for uncomplicated gonorrhea. Treatment for coinfection with Chlamydia trachomatis with oral doxycycline (100 mg twice daily for seven days) should be administered when chlamydial infection has not been excluded. For additional details, please see the California Department of Public Health Dear Colleague Letter and CDC Morbidity and Mortality Report Update to CDC's Treatment Guidelines for Gonococcal Infection, 2020.

Code Blue resuscitation events have errors that happen 25% to 40% of the time. Eliminating these errors through better guideline adherence could save thousands of lives per year (American Heart Association’s Resuscitation Journal). Equally as crucial as well-established care guidelines are capturing the care provided to cardiac arrest patients. Ensuring that the event is well documented and that the documentation is immediately available for post-arrest patient care is essential. A tablet-based documentation solution provides an exceptionally intuitive, easy to use, and clinically designed interface to improve timing errors during code blue events. .NEWS FROM AROUND THE INDUSTRY
ANA launches hub of COVID vaccine facts for nurses
Nurse.org
On March 16, the American Nurses Association, along with 19 other leading nursing and healthcare organizations, launched COVID Vaccine Facts for Nurses, an educational resource to bring “critical, current, and culturally sensitive COVID-19 vaccine information to the nation’s nurses on the frontlines of the pandemic and those caring for patients in every community across the country.”
Nurses are known for their ability to cut to the chase with the health information that matters to the lives of their patients and when it comes to battling the coronavirus; it only makes sense that nurses would be the ones leading the charge in the fight for accurate COVID-19 vaccine information.

On the front lines: Violence against nurses on the rise
WebMD
Violence against healthcare workers has reached epidemic proportions. According to the Emergency Nurses Association, healthcare workers account for approximately 50% of all victims of workplace violence. Workers in healthcare settings are four times more likely to be assaulted than workers in private industry, according to the Joint Commission, an organization that accredits U.S. healthcare organizations. “Alarmingly, the actual number of violent incidents involving healthcare workers is likely much higher because reporting is voluntary,” it states.

SARS-CoV-2 circulated undetected months before first COVID-19 cases in Wuhan, China
University of California - San Diego via Medical Xpress
Using molecular dating tools and epidemiological simulations, researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine, with colleagues at the University of Arizona and Illumina, Inc., estimate that the SARS-CoV-2 virus was likely circulating undetected for at most two months before the first human cases of COVID-19 were described in Wuhan, China in late-December 2019.

CDC: 2017 had highest number of malaria cases reported in U.S. since 1971
Healio
Surpassing the previous record of cases reported for 2016, the United States reached another all-time high with 2,161 confirmed cases of malaria in 2017, data published in MMWR showed.
“The majority of malaria infections in the United States occur among persons who have traveled to regions with ongoing malaria transmission,” the authors wrote. “However, malaria is occasionally acquired by persons who have not traveled out of the country through exposure to infected blood products, congenital transmission, nosocomial exposure, or local mosquito-borne transmission.”

Social isolation increases risk for first fatal CV event
Healio
Social isolation appeared to have little direct impact on the risk for developing a first cardiac event or stroke, but greatly increased the risk that a first CV event would be fatal, researchers reported.
According to the researchers, the absence of immediate help in responding to an acute MI or stroke was a probable explanation for the higher fatality rate in people with social isolation.
