In 1999, the Institute of Medicine (IOM; now the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine) published "To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System." The report concluded that preventable medical errors within our [U.S.] healthcare system lead to as many as 98,000 deaths per year. Perhaps even more importantly, the report noted that most errors are systemic failures that are not due to unqualified or negligent individual healthcare providers.

Nurses see the positive and negative aspects of technology, according to a LinkedIn survey of more than 600 nurses.

While hepatitis C screening improved recently, the increased rates are minimal and less than optimal among black individuals, Hispanics and women, according to a recently published study. To assess changes in HCV screening rates in the U.S., researchers analyzed data from the 2013, 2014 and 2015 National Health Interview Surveys, as these years immediately followed changes in national recommendations for screening and the greater availability of direct-acting antiviral therapy.

Patient rounding is a tried and true element of the patient experience. Nurses making their way in and out of patient rooms drives quality patient-provider relationships, ensures more patient safety, and allows nurses to assess and fulfill patient needs during the care encounter. As technology permeates the healthcare space, health systems are tapping patient rounding tools to support this age-old process.

Diabetes can add an extra layer of challenge for clinicians managing patients with osteoporosis.
It's widely known to endocrinologists that diabetes — both type 1 and type 2 — can affect bone health and put patients at a higher risk for fracture. Current research pegs the risk of fracture for people with type 1 diabetes as much as five to 10 times higher than for patients without diabetes, while the risk for those with type 2 is not quite as steep — around two times as high.

It's been a particularly tough flu season, but spring — and real relief — may be near, new numbers show. In healthcare there’s a long-standing assumption that physicians go where the money is — affluent communities with already healthy populations.
Researchers at the University of Michigan wondered if this was, in fact, true, and sought to find out via the study, Supply of Healthcare Providers in Relation to County Socioeconomic and Health Status, published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

Atrial tachycardia was present or inducible after pulmonary vein isolation in 63.2 percent of these patients.

Obesity rates in children have been rising for years, and the consequences of that extra weight may be showing up in cancer cases.
A new review found that certain cancers associated with people over 50 now affect people at younger ages more frequently. And obesity may be to blame.
Of the 20 most common cancers in the United States, the study found that nine are occurring in young adults. Approximately one in four new thyroid cancers were diagnosed in people aged 20 to 44, and about one in 10 new breast cancer cases occurred in that same age group, the researchers reported.
