Older Americans dramatically reduced their risks for heart attack and stroke over a recent 20-year period, a new analysis finds.
The likely reason: greater use of drugs to control cholesterol and blood pressure, as well as a decline in smoking, according to researchers from the University of Southern California.
The benefits were seen in both sexes, which suggests women are now getting medical care equal to men, the study authors noted.

Jane, a nonparticipating committee of one, held her own meeting up and down the hospital halls. “I’ve been working in this place for 15 years, and nothing gets better,” she said. “Last year, administration started this nursing shared governance program. This year, I still have the same crappy assignment, except there are fewer nurses on the floor to help me. They’re all at the stupid committee meetings. I don’t know why nurses are making policies anyway — that’s what the managers are for.”

A peak flow meter or microspirometer can be used routinely in primary care among patients with suspected chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for early case identification, according to a study published online in the Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice. For the study, the team evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of a series of simple lung function tests (spirometry, microspirometry, peak flow meter, and WheezoMeter) and symptom-based case-finding questionnaires to improve early identification of COPD cases in the primary care setting.

During any emergency, time is everything. Whether it be a sudden cardiac arrest, mass casualty incident or individual trauma, getting prompt attention from skilled personnel is key for survival.
However, that skilled personnel may be minutes away, and that could mean the difference between survival and death. Two new groups are looking to tap into their communities to close that time gap in the hopes of saving more lives.

Birth and death are natural parts of life. But while the birth of a child is joyous, death is difficult to deal with and causes grieving, anger, wondering what else could have been done, and sadness among many other emotions.
Nursing is a career where death is a part of not only life but work. Whether you work in a doctor’s office building, a hospital, or a nursing home, you will most likely be faced with a patient dying.

At Rigshospitale, a Danish hospital for patients requiring specialized treatments, kids that fear syringes are barely aware that their blood is being taken. This is thanks to a virtual reality game developed by Khora, a nearby virtual and augmented reality production firm. The was the result of trying a variety of different games to test out which are the most distracting while avoiding too much body movement by the children.

Health departments working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Antibiotic Resistance Lab Network (ARLN) found more than 220 instances of germs with "unusual" antibiotic resistance genes in the United States last year, according to a Vital Signs report released April 3.
The report also shows that the CDC's "containment" strategy put forth in 2017 is helping to stop the spread of new and unusual types of antibiotic resistance that have yet to spread widely.

Opioid prescriptions may decline when states legalize marijuana, two U.S. studies suggest. One study focused on older adults with Medicare drug benefits. In each state, in an average year, physicians prescribed 23 million daily doses of opioids. Compared to states where cannabis was banned, states where medical marijuana was legal averaged 3.7 million fewer opioid doses annually, while states that permitted only home cultivation of marijuana had 1.8 million fewer doses. A separate study of adults insured by Medicaid found medical marijuana laws associated with an almost 6 percent decline in opioid prescriptions.
