Environmental sustainability is an ongoing effort in almost every industry. According to The Balance, sustainability involves humans taking steps to maintain a healthy relationship with our current ecosystem while making sure we're not stopping future generations from meeting their needs. Climate for Health says health professionals are in a unique position to see the effects of climate change first hand. For that reason, Climate for Health believes that people in the health industry are strong candidates to lead the charge in advocating for sustainability efforts.

Nurse leaders are quite familiar with this question from the HCAHPS survey: "During this hospital stay, how often did nurses listen carefully to you?" And though the question seems straightforward, active listening in the healthcare environment is more complex than it sounds. "Because listening is so integral to who we are as human beings, we have a sense of when somebody's listening but we can't necessarily articulate it," says Nancy Loos, PhD, RN, NE-BC, program manager, risk management at Dignity Health Northridge Hospital Medical Center in California.
Loos says active listening can influence HCAHPS scores and patient care compliance, and it can affect an organization's financial health.

Anyone who has experienced bullying at work knows how mind-boggling it is to see professionals misbehave. Fortunately, we’ve learned why bullying exists, so we know how to design safer workplaces. For example, not all uncivil behavior constitutes bullying. According to the American Nurses Association, bullying is "repeated, unwanted, harmful actions intended to humiliate, offend, and cause distress in the recipient." Incivility is "one or more rude, discourteous, or disrespectful actions that may or may not have a negative intent behind them."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently warned that a number of insulin pumps from Medtronic MiniMed might be at risk of a cybersecurity breach, going as far as to warn patients to switch devices — "Medtronic is recalling affected MiniMed pumps," the FDA said, "and providing alternative insulin pumps to patients."
A full list of affected models can be found with the warning. The affected models cannot be updated and need to be replaced, even though "the FDA is not aware of any reports of patient harm related to these potential cybersecurity risks."

Hurricanes and other heavy rainfall events can affect the transmission of vector-borne infectious diseases in the southern coastal United States and other temperate areas of the world. Stagnant water left in the aftermath of a heavy rainfall event provides rich breeding grounds for mosquitoes, which increases the likelihood of human infection. The timing of a hurricane has a significant influence on a storm’s effect on the spread of these infections, such as West Nile virus, Zika, chikungunya and dengue, according to the result of new study published in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences.

In a new report published in Cell, researchers in the laboratory of Jeffrey M. Friedman propose a new avenue in the search for anti-obesity drugs. Collaborating with a Princeton University team, they have found that a group of brain cells previously shown to regulate hunger also controls energy expenditure. And since our body weight depends both on the calories we consume and the energy we burn, these findings could lead to a new type of weight-loss medication that acts on both sides of the energy equation.

Whether it's a rare treat or a weekly routine, spending time with grandchildren brightens life for many older adults. But a new poll suggests many of them could do more to reduce the risk of their medications harming their grandchild.
More than 80 percent of the grandparents polled say they keep their medication in the same place as usual when their grandchildren visit their house — and 72 percent keep them in their purse or bag when they go to visit their grandchildren. And nearly one-third say they store their prescription medications in something other than the container they came in—with the vast majority of them using an easy-to-open container.
