Nurse practitioners continue long wait for independence as nursing board deliberates
CHCF
“AB 890 regulations are taking longer than expected,” said Andie Martinez-Patterson, senior vice president of government affairs with CaliforniaHealth+ Advocates. “Nurse practitioners are critical to addressing the primary care provider shortage that existed before COVID-19. The gap continues to widen, especially in rural and urban communities with unmet medical needs, who are the hardest to reach and experiencing a disproportionate impact of the virus.”

California launches new digital tool giving residents convenient access to their COVID-19 vaccine record
State of California

Digital COVID-19 Vaccine Record offers private and secure access to vaccination information.
Users receive a QR code to maintain privacy, security, and ease of access to COVID-19 vaccine record.
The tool is a convenient option for Californians who received a COVID-19 vaccination to access their record from the state’s immunization registry systems.
“While CDPH recommends that vaccinated Californians keep their paper CDC card in a safe and secure place, we recognize that some people might prefer an electronic version,” said California State Epidemiologist Dr. Erica Pan. “And if one of the state’s nearly 20 million vaccinated Californians misplaces their paper card, the Digital COVID-19 Vaccine Record provides a convenient backup.”
California’s Digital COVID-19 Vaccine Record follows national standards for security and privacy, is built by the state, and provides Californians a way to view and save their vaccine record.

ANA adds COVID-19 vaccines to longstanding position on immunization
ANA
The American Nurses Association’s (ANA) longstanding position for all nurses and health care professionals to be immunized against vaccine-preventable diseases now includes the three COVID-19 vaccines being administered under the Food and Drug Administration’s Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) process. The ANA Board of Directors unanimously approved our position that all nurses should get vaccinated unless they have a medical issue that makes vaccination unadvisable. This position extends only to the three vaccines currently available under EUA and does not extend to any future COVID-19 vaccines that might become available under the EUA process.
ANA believes that the safety profiles of the authorized COVID-19 vaccines are stable and that the effectiveness of these vaccines in preventing the spread of COVID-19, as well as in mitigating the risk of emerging variants, has been proven.

ANA pleased with Supreme Court decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act
ANA
ANA is pleased with the 7-2 ruling of the United States Supreme Court to uphold the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This decision to preserve the ACA and its protections for preexisting conditions ensures that millions of Americans have health care coverage and access to the health care services that they seek.
"ANA applauds this ruling, which aligns with our more than a decade long support of this landmark law," said ANA President Ernest J. Grant, PhD, RN, FAAN. "Given the anticipated enduring health impacts from COVID-19 as well as the increased demand for health care services, all burdens and barriers that impede access must be eradicated.

Dispiriting setback: COVID deaths, cases rise again globally
Medical Xpress
COVID-19 deaths and cases are on the rise again globally in a dispiriting setback that is triggering another round of restrictions and dampening hopes for a return to normal life.
The World Health Organization reported recently that deaths climbed after nine straight weeks of decline. It recorded more than 55,000 lives lost, a three percent increase from the week before.

The long view on COVID-19 vaccine safety and efficacy
University of Pennsylvania via Medical Xpress
The mRNA vaccines for COVID-19, made by Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna, are among the most powerful vaccines the world has ever seen. According to clinical trial data, they are more than 94% effective at preventing symptomatic disease, with real-world data bearing out that success. The other vaccine currently available in the U.S., produced by Janssen, uses a viral vector and is also proving its strength. Its efficacy, which is better than seasonal flu shots, is 70% generally and even stronger against hospitalizations and death.
Experts from Penn are keeping a close eye on the regulatory steps and reporting mechanisms involved in assessing vaccine safety. Others are conducting their own studies to evaluate the immune responses the vaccines inspire. The outlook thus far seems promising, and rigorous research will continue to provide evidence that can safeguard public health and ensure trust in vaccines in the months and years to come.

UN report highlights dramatic worsening of world hunger in the pandemic year
News-Medical
There was a dramatic worsening of world hunger in 2020, the United Nations said recently — much of it likely related to the fallout of COVID-19. While the pandemic's impact has yet to be fully mapped, a multi-agency report estimates that around a tenth of the global population — up to 811 million people — were undernourished last year. The number suggests it will take a tremendous effort for the world to honor its pledge to end hunger by 2030.

CDC data show resurgence of STDs after pandemic-related decline
Healio
STDs resurged in the United States by the end of 2020 following a decline in reported cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis in March and April during the first peak of COVID-19, according to a new report.
The U.S. recorded a record number of STD cases for six consecutive years through 2019, but pandemic-related disruptions to STD testing — among other factors — caused a dip in cases during the early months of the pandemic in 2020.

Stop using Neutrogena and Aveeno spray sunscreen, J&J warns
WebMD
Consumers should stop using certain brands of spray-on sunscreen products made by Johnson & Johnson. The company has issued a voluntary recall after finding low levels of benzene, a known cancer-causing agent, in some samples.
Benzene is not an ingredient of sunscreen, and should not be present in these products. The levels detected were low and would not be expected to have an adverse effect on health, but the company says it is recalling the products anyway “out of an abundance of caution.”

New WHO study links moderate alcohol use with higher cancer risk
Centre for Addiction and Mental Health via EurekAlert!
A new study from the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer, published in the journal Lancet Oncology, has found an association between alcohol and a substantially higher risk of several forms of cancer, including breast, colon, and oral cancers. Increased risk was evident even among light to moderate drinkers (up to two drinks a day), who represented one in seven of all new cancers in 2020 and more than 100,000 cases worldwide.

Severe food avoidance, restriction reduces quality of life in IBS
Healio
Patients with irritable bowel syndrome who engaged in severe food avoidance and restriction experienced more severe IBS symptoms and a reduced quality of life, according to study results.
“Food intake is an important trigger of GI symptoms in IBS and the presence of food-related GI symptoms are associated with more severe IBS symptoms and a reduced quality of life. However, the factors explaining these meal-related symptoms are still not clear,” Chloe Melchior, MD, PhD, Institute for Research and Innovation in Biomedicine at Normandy University, and colleagues wrote in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. “IBS patients are more likely to avoid or restrict some food items themselves to improve their symptoms, but the factors involved in food avoidance and restriction in IBS or the link to nutrient intake are not known.”

Screening could reduce lung cancer deaths by one quarter
Medscape
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, with nearly two million fatalities per year, but these deaths could be reduced by a quarter with more targeted lung screening, argues a new report.
Screening of high-risk individuals with low-dose computed tomography has been shown in clinical trials to shift the diagnosis of lung cancer to earlier stages.
This could "transform lung cancer from a fatal to a treatable condition, with considerable impact on quality of life" as well as a "considerable reduction in the number of deaths from lung cancer."
