An American Heart Association Resuscitation Journal study showed that every 10% increase in AHA guideline adherence results in a 30% increase in the likelihood of ROSC. Code blue teams often rely on memory, paper, and wall clocks to comply with critical timed interventions and dosage calculations. Care teams in Code Blue events can benefit from tools that allow them to adhere more closely to AHA guidelines. Hand-held software tools can guide compliant code blue care via metronomes, dosage calculators, timers, and prompts while capturing events in real-time. For more information, and to view the study.

Mental Health Awareness Week — Mental Health By the Numbers
NAMI
Millions of people in the U.S. are affected by mental illness each year. It’s important to measure how common mental illness is, so we can understand its physical, social and financial impact — and so we can show that no one is alone. These numbers are also powerful tools for raising public awareness, stigma-busting and advocating for better healthcare.

Early-stage COVID-19 vaccine data provide 'good news' for older adults
Healio
An expanded phase 1 trial assessing a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine co-developed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and Moderna Inc. provided promising news for older adults, researchers said.
The vaccine, mRNA-1273, was tolerated in adults aged older than 55 years, with most associated adverse events being mild or moderate, and it produced antibody responses similar to those seen in younger patients, according to data published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

'Super-sharers' responsible for a disproportionate amount of COVID-19 disinformation on social media
Cardiff University via PhysOrg
A small number of social media users could be responsible for amplifying and boosting a disproportionate amount of COVID-19 disinformation, a report says.
Academics at Cardiff University's Crime and Security Research Institute investigated people's activities on social media in five countries — the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain — via a survey conducted between March 18 and April 30.
The team has identified a group they label as "super-sharers," who amount to six percent of social media users and were much more likely to have shared COVID-19 disinformation. These individuals possess a number of common traits: they have admitted to sharing any form of disinformation in the past month, either knowingly or unknowingly; they share political news on social media at least once a day and have checked social media every day across three or more platforms. They also use social media to stay up-to-date with the news.

Not 'The Jetsons,' but close: Walmart testing drone delivery of COVID-19 testing kits
By Scott E. Rupp
"Jetsons"-like technology is coming to healthcare, like it or not. Blame COVID-19. If nothing else, the recent news from Walmart, Quest Diagnostics, and DroneUp is pretty exciting. The three are launching a pilot program that provides drone delivery of COVID-19 self-collection kits to single-family homes in North Las Vegas. Sin City brings us many things innovative — Wayne Newton residencies, the annual blockbuster CES technology conference, and now drone-delivered COVID-19 test kits.

The first patient to be cured of HIV has died following a cancer relapse

Known as the “Berlin patient,” British-born Timothy Ray Brown became the first person in history to be cured of human immunodeficiency virus, the illness that can lead to acquired immune deficiency syndrome. The groundbreaking achievement happened over a decade ago and since then insights gained have seen a further two patients functionally cured of HIV. It was announced by the International AIDS Society on Sept. 30 that Brown recently died following a battle with cancer, but his story remains a symbol of hope for the tens of millions of people living with HIV.

HPV vaccination substantially reduces risk for invasive cervical cancer
Healio
Quadrivalent HPV vaccination substantially reduced the risk for invasive cervical cancer among Swedish girls and women aged 10 to 30 years, according to results of a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
“This is the first time that we, on a population level, are able to show that HPV vaccination is protective not only against cellular changes that can be precursors to cervical cancer, but also against actual invasive cervical cancer,” Jiayao Lei, PhD, researcher in the department of medical epidemiology and biostatistics at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, said in a press release. “It is something we have long suspected but that we are now able to show in a large national study linking HPV vaccination and development of cervical cancer at the individual level.”

Cells sacrifice themselves to boost immune response to viruses
University of Rochester Medical Center via Medical Xpress
Whether flu or coronavirus, it can take several days for the body to ramp up an effective response to a viral infection. New research appearing in the journal Nature Immunology describes how different cells in the immune system work together, communicate, and — in the case of cells called neutrophils — bring about their own death to help fight off infections. The findings could have important implications for the development of vaccines and anti-viral therapies.

Has telehealth had its day? It depends on who you ask
By Scott E. Rupp
According to some new studies, telehealth use has plummeted from its COVID-19 peak in April and May when the pandemic was in full swing and much of the economy was shuttered. However, some reports suggest that its use continues to soar. Despite the possible carving out of virtual care from the traditional face-to-face models, significant issues remain. Primary among them is reimbursement for virtual services.
