COVID-19 Ushers In Decades of Change For Nursing Profession
Hub
"Often nurses are invisible in the discussion of healthcare, but the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light the indisputable need for nurses," says Patricia Davidson, dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. It's become clear, she says, that "nurses provide the bulk of care and assume the brunt of danger that comes with stemming a worldwide health crisis."

When Inequity Gets Measured, It Gets Managed
CHCF
Latinx account for 39% of the state’s population but 61% of COVID-19 infections and 49% of all deaths, according to data from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). To combat persistent health disparities that have been amplified by the coronavirus pandemic and to hold counties accountable for the health of neighborhoods most deeply affected by COVID-19, the department on recently added a new health equity metric to California’s blueprint for reopening businesses and institutions.

Skincare Tips and Mastering Your Sleep Schedule
Trusted Health
Research shows that the natural repair processes of the skin happen when the sun goes down. This is because stem cells in the epidermis reproduce largely at night and are responsible for creating new skin cells. For the best beauty sleep, apply your nighttime products earlier rather than later.

Hospitals search for enough beds and nurses as virus rebounds
Politico
The coronavirus is engulfing big city hospitals in states including Utah, Wisconsin and Indiana that are running low on nurses and beds and are being forced to set up overflow facilities.
With new daily U.S. cases surpassing 62,000 on Oct. 15, the prospect of swamped intensive care units is prompting some governors who previously resisted public health orders to weigh new restrictions to ease pressure on their healthcare systems. From the early days of the pandemic, the availability of ICU beds — and hospitals' ability to treat people who need life-support equipment like ventilators to breathe — has been an important benchmark for whether local health systems can handle outbreaks.

An American Heart Association Resuscitation Journal study showed that every 10% increase in AHA guideline adherence results in a 30% increase in the likelihood of ROSC. Code blue teams often rely on memory, paper, and wall clocks to comply with critical timed interventions and dosage calculations. Care teams in Code Blue events can benefit from tools that allow them to adhere more closely to AHA guidelines. Hand-held software tools can guide compliant code blue care via metronomes, dosage calculators, timers, and prompts while capturing events in real-time. For more information, and to view the study.

The power of curiosity and critical thinking in healthcare
By Keith Carlson
In healthcare, thinking critically is central to successful outcomes. In research, education, and other avenues of inquiry, it is the ability to examine a situation from as many angles as possible that drives innovation forward. Simultaneously, curiosity is a key factor in the unlocking of potential solutions. Curiosity is one driver of critical thinking, and the aptitude for thinking critically can lead to a never-ending positive feedback loop of discovery.

FDA warns of possible fetal risk linked to NSAIDs
Healio
The FDA announced that manufacturers of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs will be required to update their boxed warning to list potential fetal risk in women using the medications 20 weeks or later in their pregnancies.
The agency notified healthcare professionals of reports of rare, but serious, kidney problems and low amniotic fluid levels in the fetuses of women using NSAIDs in the second half of their pregnancies, which could increase the likelihood of pregnancy-related complications.

Inexpensive and rapid testing of drugs for resistant infections possible
Penn State via ScienceDaily
A rapid and simple method for testing the efficacy of antibacterial drugs on infectious microbes has been developed and validated by a team of Penn State researchers. "Compared to other methods of detection, our method does not require complex systems and measurement setups," says Aida Ebrahimi, assistant professor of electrical engineering and a senior author on a paper recently posted online in the journal ACS Sensors. "Its simplicity and low cost are among the advantages and coupling our technology to machine learning makes the accuracy of our method comparable to the gold standard method and much better than other rapid methods."

Study report: Children and the coronavirus
By Dorothy L. Tengler
Since the start of the pandemic, researchers have been puzzled at how children have been spared by the same rate of COVID-19 infection as adults. In fact, new evidence shows that children carry high levels of the virus even without falling ill, which may impact the spread of the virus to others, especially those who are at high risk of developing severe COVID-19. One study, out of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, found that young children carry far more of the coronavirus than adults.

Documented obesity diagnosis independent predictor of weight loss
Healio
A formal diagnosis of obesity on the same day as an initial recorded weight is independently associated with weight loss nine to 15 months later, according to a large analysis of electronic healthcare records.
“In a large sample of patients drawn from the electronic medical records of 15 diverse healthcare systems, just the recorded diagnosis of obesity is associated with greater weight loss and the likelihood of losing at least five percent weight loss, compared with patients with high BMI who do not have the diagnosis,” W. Timothy Garvey, MD, FACE, professor of medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, told Healio. “This is independent of demographics, insurance, obesity medications and other factors.”

Instituting a minimum price for alcohol reduces deaths, hospital stays
Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs via EurekAlert!
When governments create a minimum price for alcoholic beverages, deaths and hospitalizations related to alcohol use significantly decrease, according to results from a new report in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.
Called "minimum unit pricing," such policies "would result in a substantial and lasting reduction in the harms caused by alcohol in society," says lead researcher Adam Sherk, Ph.D., of the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada.
"As we continue to weather the COVID-19 pandemic and hear concerns about overwhelming our healthcare systems, this study shows that a minimum unit price for alcohol would help to free up valuable resources by decreasing alcohol's burden on our healthcare systems," says Sherk.
