A 2018 survey — conducted by NursesTakeDC, a group that lobbies for stricter nurse-to-patient ratios, and analyzed by University of Illinois researchers along with the Illinois Economic Policy Institute — found that only 20 percent of nurses in the United States feel staffing levels are safe.
Increasingly, those concerns have been erupting into protest and political action.

Long-term treatment with opioids, such as morphine, prior to trauma enhances fear learning in mice, according to a study published in Neuropsychopharmacology. The findings, which link chronic opioid treatment before a traumatic event with responses to subsequent stressful events, may suggest a possible mechanism underlying the frequent co-occurrence of post-traumatic stress disorder and opioid dependence.

Like any career, forging a way forward in the world of healthcare takes diligence, planning, and nurturing of your goals. For those interested in achieving their career objectives, the contents of your career-building toolbox should not be overlooked. For the healthcare professional, some essential building blocks are the resume or CV, cover letter, business card, and complete LinkedIn profile. There are others, but most everyone will agree that these are absolutely necessary.

A stigma is still associated with palliative care as some clinicians continue to believe that the concept undermines a curative intervention. However, palliative care can be effectively introduced along with other treatments, and the combination of care improves patient symptoms and quality of life. Nurses, because of their routine interactions with patients, can participate in deciding who would benefit from palliation, acting as intermediaries between the oncologist and the patient in such situations.

The Partnership for Aging and Cancer Research Program has awarded seven grants intended to fund research into the link between aging and cancer.
The partnership — a collaboration of NCI, National Institute on Aging and Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation — launched in 2018 as a two-year pilot to fund cross-disciplinary, cross-institutional research into why older age contributes to cancer risk. Researchers who study cancer are paired with investigators who study aging.

Eradicating deadly staph using a new breed of antibiotics has revealed promising results in research released by QUT in an effort to help overcome one of the biggest modern medical challenges.

Healthcare communication issues are a thing of the present, not the past. Communication remains fragmented, with many healthcare organizations remaining reliant on landline phones, fax machines, and pagers. Furthermore, the adoption of modern communication technology is often happening in silos. These findings are from technology company TigerConnect in its annual State of Healthcare Communications report, a survey of healthcare leaders and patients detailing the pervasive challenges in healthcare communications.

As an increasing number of bacteria develop antibiotic resistance, scientists are looking beyond this family of medications that has served us so well up until now.
As the usefulness of antibiotics begins to wane, there is an urgent need to develop new ways to treat infections.
Now, researchers at the University of Connecticut in Storrs say they may have found a way forward – by looking back at how doctors treated infections before the advent of antibiotics.

Some of the same mutations allowing humans to fend off deadly infections also make us more prone to certain inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, such as Crohn's disease. Researchers describe how ancestral origins impact the likelihood that people of African or Eurasian descent might develop immune-related diseases. The authors also share evidence that the human immune system is still evolving.

A new home urine test for prostate cancer could revolutionize diagnosis, according to new research. As well as diagnosing aggressive prostate cancer, the test predicts whether patients will require treatment up to five years earlier than standard clinical methods. It also means that men don't have to come into the clinic to provide a urine sample — or have to undergo an uncomfortable rectal examination.
