PHTA's San Diego Chapter Celebrates 1st Anniversary

From Aug. 7: The PHTA San Diego Chapter recently celebrated their one-year anniversary. The industry professionals have made an impact in San Diego County in just 12 short months. Chapter President Javier Payan of Payan Pool Service, Inc. sat down to explain how the group has already elevated the pool and hot tub industry in their community, and he has no plans of slowing down in the next 12 months. As the chapter continues to grow – including the addition of a WAVE Young Professionals Chapter – Payan expects greater benefits for industry professionals in San Diego County.

PHTA 2018 Fellow Passes

From Aug. 21: Earlier this week, PHTA 2018 Fellow Greg Garrett passed away. For over 45 years, Garrett was part of the aquatics industry. He held several positions in PHTA (as well as APSP and NSPI) and the National Plasterers Council. Garrett was a strong advocate for pool and hot tub industry education and taught between 40 and 50 seminars a year at national trade shows and regional venues and was a current voting member of the PHTA Recreational Water Quality Committee and the PHTA-12 Standard Writing Committee. Also, he helped co-launch the Pool Chemistry Certification—Residential, the first chemistry course specifically for residential pool professionals. From June 26: Last summer, PHTA let you know that effective, August 30, 2018, significant changes to California’s Proposition 65, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, took effect. Tips on Winterizing Inground Pools in Severe Climates (Snowbelt)

From Nov. 27: As we head into the winter season, make sure that you familiarize yourself with what you need to do to winterize inground pools in severe climates. PHTA's Recreational Water Quality Committee (RWQC) created a Fact Sheet titled Winterizing a Pool – Inground Pools In Severe Climates (Snowbelt) that focuses on the key elements that go into winterizing an inground pool to maximize and prevent both physical and chemical damage to components of the pool. Former USA Diving Chairman Don Leas Passes Away

From May 1: Swimming legend and Former USA Diving Chairman Don Leas passed away on Thursday, April 25 at the age of 84. Leas was a tireless long-standing active member of the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA). His passion, commitment and service to the pool and spa spanned many decades, always enriching us with his knowledge and wisdom. He was highly active serving on multiple Pool & Hot Tub Alliance Standard Writing and Technical Committees. Also, Leas was instrumental in launching, in conjunction with the International Code Council and the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance, the International Swimming Pool & Spa Code (ISPSC). He served two terms as Vice Chair of the ISPSC in 2015 and 2018.
Per Swimming World Magazine, Leas had been suffering for many years from an aortic aneurism which finally caused his death. He was survived by his wife Carol, a daughter Barbara Ann (Thomas) Crow, and a son, Michael Kenneth Leas, both of Payson, Arizona. A visitation will be held on Friday, May 3 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Global Funeral Home and Crematory in Clarion, PA. An additional visitation will be held on Saturday, May 4 from 10-11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Clarion, PA. Funeral services will follow at the Church at 11:00 a.m. with Rev.
