APSP Builders Council Corner — Salt Pools
|
   |
APSP's Builders Council is hearing a lot that consumers are wanting salt pools instead of chlorine pools. With this in mind, they take the time to educate their clients on the differences between salt and chlorine pools. It's easy to understand the differences by getting back to the basics. Check out how you can simply explain the difference to your clients:
When you add water and electricity to a plate covered with rhodium, you get two by-products. One is chlorine gas, which comes from the chloride portion of, salt, sodium chloride. The other by-product is sodium hydroxide, which comes from the sodium part of sodium chloride. The hydroxide comes from the water portion (H2O). Salt chlorine generators keep pH much more balanced. While chlorine gas has a very low pH of below 1, sodium hydroxide has a very high pH of above 13. pH is on a scale from 0–14. Zero is acidic and 14 is scale forming. The ideal range for pH is 7.4 to 7.6. The reason why people love swimming in salt water pools is much more because with traditional chlorine tablets, they have a pH of 2.9 and tend to make the water acidic and even eat up equipment (especially heaters). A human eye, with a pH of 7.4 likes water that is close to that pH. With salt, your pH will tend to rise slowly (usually), but much slower than pH lowers with chlorine tablets. The salt level in the ocean is appx. 32,000 parts per million of salt. In salt pools, it is at 3,200 parts per million, or only about 10 percent of sea water.

There are three main ways to end up with a potentially unsafe and/or green pool. The first is chemically. The second is from improper circulation and filtration (likely caused by DIRTY FILTERS). The third is a combination of the first two. So you can see why properly maintaining filtration equipment is at the top of the priority list.

For some the feeling of not belonging may be brief, while for others it may be intense and difficult to dispel.

U.S. retail sales in 2018 could climb slightly higher than last year's 3.9 percent gain, as lower unemployment and growing wages drive consumer confidence higher. The National Retail Federation projected industry sales will grow between 3.8 and 4.4 percent this year, excluding automobiles, gas stations and restaurants. A jump of 4.4 percent would be the biggest increase since 2011, when retail sales climbed 5 percent.

Chances are that more Americans are familiar with "The Apprentice," the reality TV show formerly starring the current president of the United States, than they are with apprenticeship programs. Today, graduates from such programs constitute just 0.2 percent of the labor force.
