This past December I read with great interest a market research report about the future of the global inflatable and portable pools market published by Research and Markets, a Dublin-based global market research firm. The report caught my eye because the research indicated that by 2023, the market for the most affordable form of pool is estimated to boast a 13-percent compound annual growth rate.
That's a potentially very big number that can only be the result of market trends leading consumers to the product category.

Few would argue that when it comes to hiring laborers these days, it's a sellers market. As is true throughout the construction industry, pool builders consistently report that hiring laborers is one of the greatest challenges they face.
"It's almost impossible," says Brent Handy, owner and president of Paragon Pools in Lake City, Florida. "The vast majority of people we encounter when we try to fill a position are typically either older people who lack skill sets and are just looking for some form of income with no real desire to work. Or, young people who want a paycheck but don't want to work for it. Many don't even know how to use a shovel. It's incredibly frustrating. Finding those people who want to work hard, want to show up and prove they can do a great job, who take pride in their work and are willing to be patient and learn — they are very, very hard to find."

Amazon is becoming a bigger presence in the world of physical retail, through its ownership of Whole Foods stores, the opening of bookstores, its rapid expansion of Amazon Go cashierless groceries and new 4-star stores for popular items.
For investors focused on the company's growing footprint, that all made for a confusing disclosure in Amazon's latest annual report, which showed that total square footage for physical stores dropped last year.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that trade talks with China were going well and suggested he was open to pushing off the deadline to complete negotiations, saying March 1 was not a “magical” date.
Tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports are scheduled to rise to 25 percent from 10 percent by March 1 if the world’s two largest economies do not settle their trade dispute, but Trump has suggested several times that he would be open to postponing the deadline.

There's a reason growth strategy is such a popular topic in the small business world. On the surface, the requirements for growth seem relatively straightforward. As long as your company is doing well, you shouldn't have trouble increasing staff or clientele. However, any veteran business leader knows it's a lot more complicated than that.

Small businesses may be able to receive a big tax break this year, thanks to the new rules. They also may face a big headache: Figuring out whether the tax break applies to them.
The problem is that a centerpiece of the legislation is a write-off for "qualified business income," but it's unclear whether certain activities count. That is sowing confusion as the April deadline for filing the first returns under the law approaches.
