California pool contractors question Equipotential bonding & VGB drain cover & spacing requirements
|
   |
APSP
California pool contractors have questioned the enforcement of these two regulations: 1. Equipotential bonding requirements for pools and spas (electrical); and 2. VGB drain cover and spacing requirements relating to suction entrapment avoidance (safety) and are seeking clarification and/or change in the regulations. Representatives from APSP and CPSA met at the Western Pool & Spa Show for the expressed purpose of developing a strategy on how to fix two technical issues. The answers to both these technical positions are couched in the ANSI/APSP/ICC-7 2013 Standard for Suction Entrapment Avoidance in Swimming Pools, Wading Pools, Spas, Hot Tubs, and Catch Basins; the ANSI/APSP-16 2011 Standard for Suction Fittings for Use in Swimming Pools, Wading Pools, Spas, and Hot Tubs; and NFPA 70: National Electrical Code standard, backed by APSP technical experts. If further action is needed to clarify California code and law, APSP will assist CPSA. For more information contact Carvin DiGiovanni.

The pool, spa and aquatics industries tend to focus on child drowning and suction entrapment, and for good reasons, but there are other aspects of aquatic safety that are equally important but don't get quite as much attention. Diving accidents, for example, can result in catastrophic injuries and multi-million dollar lawsuits that have led to specific construction standards designed to make pools safer for diving.

Too few family businesses survive into the second and third generations of ownership. The reason is most often poor communication between family members. Current owners should take steps to strengthen their family dynamics and to assure that damaging emotions do not scuttle the enterprise when it comes time to hand over the reins of control.

SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT |
By Catherine Iste
Perhaps with just one more day in the week, we could get all our work done. Or maybe even with just a few uninterrupted hours, we could achieve an empty inbox or completed to-do list. Then, we could take a minute to indulge in more creative pursuits. Yes, if we were just given the chance to work a little more, we could get it all done and then do something fun. What if, instead of trying to find time to work more, we could work less and accomplish more?

Measure twice so you only pay once. While representing commercial tenants with leasing matters since 1993, we have found that some landlords are overcharging tenants for more square footage than the tenant actually has. As we explain in our book, this is a common discrepancy in the commercial leasing industry. Are you paying for phantom space?

Market Watch
For decades, U.S. companies have been chasing cheap labor offshore and then importing products to sell in the U.S. market.
Now, Trumponomics, a broader focus on Total Cost of Ownership (TCO quantifies all relevant costs, risks and strategic factors) and advanced manufacturing together have the potential to end the manufacturing stagnation of the past 30 years and create millions of manufacturing jobs in the U.S.
