There is a difference between managing and leading. Managing centers on generating measurable outcomes and controlling work output, budgets and costs, what you might call the "behind the scenes" work. Leaders, on the other hand, are inspirational in that they encourage meeting challenges and creating change, and they provide an unobstructed path for turning ideas into reality, what you might call "center stage" work. Effective leadership cannot prevail under negative circumstances such as putdowns, dishonesty, demands, frustration, denigration, manipulation, fear or micromanagement. These negative forces create high turnover, a lack of productivity, a lack of motivation and a negative attitude in those required to produce.

No one should be surprised that there has been a backlash to globalization, given the scale of disruption that has resulted from more interconnected economies. What is surprising is that it has arrived now. That's because globalization, at least in the form we have known it, leveled off a decade ago. And that shows a crucial risk of the recent push to reset the terms of the global economy.

In case you haven't heard, there's a skills gap in the United States. That has become common rhetoric over the past few years and seems to be the refrain on business pages across the country.
