Pool and Hot Tub Reopening Guidance
Virtually all public aquatic facilities in the country have been closed by State Executive Order due to COVID-19. As a number of states and local jurisdictions have or are in the process of issuing directives easing stay-at-home restrictions, PHTA has created a guide of practical tips to consider when reopening an aquatic facility.
These tips were developed by PHTA with input from the American Red Cross, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Life Time Fitness,
local and state health departments, pool management companies, public health consultants, the World Waterpark Association and the YMCA, and is intended to provide guidance and best practices for public aquatic facilities as they are permitted to reopen.

PHTA Govt. Relations Update: Week of May 4
The PHTA GR team has been busy advocating for continued industry operation around the country. PHTA has been successful in communicating with Governor’s offices, state House and Senate leaders, and state and local health officials throughout the country. Last week, Michigan Governor, Gretchen Whitmer, announced public and private construction can resume on May 7, as long as specific guidelines are followed. PHTA and NESPA have sent letters advocating for the retail, construction, and distribution industry sectors to the Governors of Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts. These letters, as well as the Michigan construction guidance, can be seen in our Week of May 4 GR Update document.
Aside from COVID-19, states like Wyoming, Texas and Maryland have seen movement on the regulatory side. These regulations have to do with updated pool and spa rules and newly adopted code. See our GR Update document for more info and check out the PHTA GR Alerts spreadsheet here, which contains everything we are actively monitoring.
PHTA has developed legislative recaps for states that have already adjourned session sine die. PHTA has published recaps for the following states and they can be viewed below:

Celebrate Safety in May
PHTA, the American Red Cross, the National Recreation and Park Association, and the World Waterpark Association, have joined together to promote May as National Water Safety Month (NWSM). This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many community pools, aquatic center and waterparks are delaying their opening dates. However, while the summer swimming season might get off to a later start than usual, the need to educate consumers about safer water practices is as important as ever.
Visit the NWSM website for tools and resources you can use to promote water safety to your customers.
In addition, PHTA is proud to support the International Code Council’s National Building Safety Month where "Safer Buildings, Safer Communities, Safer World" is the theme. The month-long campaign, sponsored by the American Gas Association, the American Concrete Institute and the National Association of Home Builders, emphasizes modern building codes and strong code compliance for building safety professionals. This month, they can learn about the importance of disaster preparedness, water safety, sustainability and innovation, as well as training the next generation.
