The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) expressed concern recently that many commercial pools & spas will be delayed in opening this summer season along the East Coast, especially in the Mid-Atlantic region, due to an unprecedented number of visa denials. Pools that will be impacted are those that supplement their American Lifeguard work force by recruiting lifeguards internationally through the Summer Work and Travel Exchange Visitor Program. The swimming pool industry's recruitment of overseas lifeguards has grown over the years due to the seasonal labor shortage caused by a variety of factors impacting the availability and interest of Americans pursuing seasonal employment.

Tips for a successful pool and spa season
APSP
As we head into the pool and spa season, APSP wants to remind you to replace your customers' expired drain covers or suction outlet fitting assemblies (SOFA's). The "Check A Drain" initiative reminds both homeowners as well as professionals, to make sure pool, spa and hot tub drain covers are replaced per the manufacturer’s time requirement stamped on the cover in accordance with Federal mandates in the Virginia Graeme Baker (VGB) Pool & Spa Safety Act. Builders and installers are strongly encouraged to contact their public and residential customers. This is a great way to reconnect with customers, review the pool/spa circulation system, as well as the integrity of the existing drain cover frames. For your reference, we've developed a Frequently Asked Questions document available at APSP.org/Check. For more information, email Carvin DiGiovanni at cdigiovanni@apsp.org.
