There are thousands of community pools across the country struggling to stay open and viable due to cuts to municipal budgets. The story of the Brook Park Swim Club, my community pool, is typical of many. The Brook Park Swim Club, in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, isn't just a place to swim – it is the heart and soul of our community. Our kids meet throughout the summer for swim team, parties, pick-up soccer games and more.

Baby boomers are retiring at a rate of 10,000 a day — taking their technical and institutional knowledge with them — leading to a shortage of skilled workers. But thanks to an innovative collaboration between pool pump manufacturer Nidec and Ranken Technical College in St. Louis, more young people are learning about pool pumps and plumbing every day.
In 2017, Nidec installed a test stand for pool and spa pump motors at Ranken, and since that time, students in the school’s microenterprise program have been using the display to learn about variable speed pumps and how to handle electric and plumbing hookups.

To this day I still get approached at distribution and asked, "What is that thing hanging off the back of your truck?" They are talking about the vacuum system I use for pool cleaning every day.

Does the use of cash have an expiration date?
The evidence that physical loot is on borrowed time is slowly but surely mounting. But don’t read the last rites for cash just yet.
If anything, the checkout register outages at Target stores over the weekend were a reminder that point-of-sale machines aren’t foolproof, and nothing beats cash when technology fails.

Instead of complaining about millennials, it is time for us to start taking responsibility for supporting their leadership development. Here are a few ways to take on the challenge. For example, one common critique of millennials is that they need exact details mapped out for them on how they can succeed and constant feedback along the way. While that may be a challenge sometimes, this is exactly the type of trait that can help us grow leaders.

Up until early 2018, most companies did not use Groups on Facebook. Why would they when they had already built a community of followers on their page? That January, though, Facebook announced the algorithmic change that is still plaguing brands: their content is not ranked as highly in the News Feed as posts from friends, family and Groups. User-generated content could be a way to encourage friends and family members to amplify company messages. For that to be successful, though, you must depend on others. That’s why some businesses saw Groups as the best way to potentially "beat" the new algorithm.

U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield Township, wants to establish a new federal agency to keep American manufacturers competitive.
Peters is proposing a National Institute of Manufacturing to streamline federal manufacturing programs, promote efforts to train workers and develop a national strategy to keep up with an evolving global marketplace. It would unite 58 existing manufacturing programs across 11 different federal agencies under one agency's roof.

Manufacturers see the Trump administration's trade policies as a bigger challenge than the economy.
That's one of the findings of a quarterly survey by the National Association of Manufacturers, or NAM, released last week. Fifty-six percent of the 689 manufacturing companies questioned in the survey cited trade issues including tariffs on imports from Mexico and China as one of their greatest challenges.

In 2018, the California Energy Commission (CEC) proposed updates to the appliance efficiency rules (Title 20) pertaining to portable electric spas as well as inflatable spas. The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA) worked with manufacturer members to submit comments to the CEC throughout the rulemaking process. The result was regulations that would improve the efficiency standards for standard spas, exercise spas, and combination spas manufactured on or after June 1, 2019 and add a new efficiency standard for inflatable spas manufactured on or after June 1, 2019. The regulations maintained the existing scope — covering standard spas, exercise spas, combination spas, and inflatable spas.
