U.S. retailers large and small are pressing ahead with testing the use of artificial intelligence to track what products shoppers pick up and to automatically bill their accounts when they walk out the door, eliminating the need for checkout lines.
The concept got a push from Amazon Go stores, which Amazon.com Inc. launched in early 2018; there are now 15 stores, with two opening last week, in New York and San Francisco.

Far too many companies that have their products made overseas wrongly assume they will own the molds and the accompanying IP used to make their products. If you do not pay for your molds upfront and have a contract that both works for the country in which your molds are being made and used and that makes clear the molds and their accompanying IP actually belong to you, they probably do not. If you do not have such a contract, there is a good chance you will find yourself unable to switch product suppliers even if your product supplier raises prices through the roof and produces terrible products.

With demand soaring for qualified manufacturing workers in Connecticut, Sikorsky Aircraft and the Teamsters union are ratcheting up an 18-year partnership to train the next generation of aerospace employees, reaching beyond community colleges and vocational schools into high schools.
The Stratford helicopter maker, a subsidiary of defense manufacturer Lockheed Martin Corp., and the union that represents 4,000 Sikorsky workers recently announced an aircraft manufacturing pre-apprenticeship program certified by the Department of Labor.

 Earlier this week, PHTA 2018 Fellow Greg Garrett passed away. For over 45 years, Garrett was part of the aquatics industry. He held several positions in PHTA (as well as APSP and NSPI) and the National Plasterers Council. Garrett was a strong advocate for pool and hot tub industry education and taught between 40 and 50 seminars a year at national trade shows and regional venues and was a current voting member of the PHTA Recreational Water Quality Committee and the PHTA-12 Standard Writing Committee. Also, he helped co-launch the Pool Chemistry Certification—Residential, the first chemistry course specifically for residential pool professionals.
