The City
River swimming may be paddling toward Manhattan.
The city's economic development agency recently put out a call for concepts for bringing a self-filtering pool to the East River — an idea pushed for years by a nonprofit called +POOL. In its "request for expressions of interest," the NYC Economic Development Corp. said it hopes to "provide the public with a swim facility which is capable of filtering the waters of the East River to enable safe recreational access to clean water."

On Tuesday, September 24, the Department of Labor announced a final rule that would make roughly 1.3 million American workers eligible for overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act or "FLSA." The rule, which is intended to provide consistency for employers and prosperity for American workers, will raise the "standard salary level" from $455 to $684 per week or $35,568 total per year. Attention PHTA Service Professionals! This is your opportunity to take PHTA University in-person service education courses happens this November at the 2019 International Pool | Spa| Patio Expo. Starting on Sat., Nov. 2 through Mon., Nov. 4, PHTA University will offer in-person pre-conference service education programs including the following courses: CMS Certified Pool & Spa Maintenance Specialist, CST Certified Pool & Spa Service Technician and CHTT Certified Hot Tub Technician. Those that successfully complete the courses, can sit for the exams on-site, take the exam at a local New Orleans PSI testing center or at a PSI testing center convenient for them. Longtime PHTA Member Troy Derheim launched Aquatics Empowered, a nonprofit built to connect communities and individuals with resources to access aquatic therapy. Derheim envisioned and built an organization to help the disabled, children, elderly, service members and others seeking aquatic therapy support, and to promote the value and benefits of the water.
This November Aquatics Empowered is hosting their 1st Annual Hot Tubbing For Hope – a worldwide fundraising event asking people to gather friends, family and even pets to find a hot tub or pool and enjoy themselves. Aquatics Empowered is encouraging participants to submit photos or short videos to garner exposure for the event and to qualify for awards and prizes. Submissions will be judged on fun and creativity and will be shared live online throughout the event.
Proceeds from Hot Tubbing For Hope will be used to help provide resources and grants for rural communities to establish or maintain aquatic facilities, help individuals in need of aquatic therapy acquire access, and provide support to charities and their beneficiaries to access aquatic therapy. Teams and participants can sign-up and pledge donations at CharityWeb.
