Following an exhaustive nationwide search, the Pool and Hot Tub Alliance recently announced the appointment of Sabeena Hickman to the role of president and CEO of the organization. She officially started in the leadership position in early September. Hickman comes to PHTA's top job with over two decades of experience in similar trade associations, including a recently concluded tenure as the CEO of the National Association of Landscape Professionals.

On July 19, 2021, the U.S. Department of Energy will begin implementing sweeping changes to rules governing the production and sale of pool pumps. It is, by most any reckoning, a sea change in the pool pump industry, and potentially a major advance in energy efficiency in pools.
"To date there have been a relatively small number of regulations on the state level, except in high population markets in the Sun Belt, California, Arizona and Florida," says Scott Petty, product manager for Hayward.

Although not a ubiquitous problem, in some areas abandoned pools remain a hazard that reflects poorly on the industry. The pool and spa industry refers to an abandoned pool as being "devoid of water," as having "no liquid assets" or as "left high and dry." Even if filters and pumps are operational, a pool is considered abandoned when the water level falls too low for proper sanitation.
