Last week, APSP Education Director, Silvia Uribe proctored the three-day PSCC Professional Pool & Spa Construction course at the Asociacion de Profesionales de La Piscina APP A.C. headquarters in Mexico City. This is the second year in a row that the Asociacion de Profesionales la Piscina APP A.C. has hosted the event in Mexico, and the first time conducted on Spanish. Through strong international partnerships, APSP University is making strides in building a more educated workforce and safer industry. APSP's CSP Certified Pool & Spa Professional of the Year award, now in its third year, is given to a CSP who has advanced the service profession through outstanding achievements and dedication to the industry. On October 30, APSP recognized Rick Woemmel, CBP, CSP from Bi-State Pool & Spa as APSP’s 2018 CSP of the Year. Rick has dedicated over 25 years of service to the industry and has become one of the organization's most prominent educators—he has taught CBP, CSP, CHTT and CPO courses at regional and national shows—and serves as vice chairman of the APSP Builders Council. In addition to his work with APSP, he has helped develop the American Red Cross lifeguarding program and is a SCUBA instructor in his spare time.

George Barnett has been a part of the pool and spa industry for 14 years, rising from a designer with Blue Haven Pools to owning his own successful company, KB Custom Pools, for 10 years running. His crowning achievement has been taking KB Custom pools from grassroots, "knocking on doors" beginning and turning it into a $2.5 million company in under 10 years. He is also dedicated to giving back and is working on developing a nonprofit to help children learn to swim at a young age.

LED lights have taken the pool industry in bold new directions — and have done so in increasingly rapid fashion in only the past few years. In terms of sales, the new compact-LED fixtures have reportedly overtaken traditional incandescent lights, which are increasingly relegated to replacement sales.
According to James Carter, lighting product manager for Hayward Industries, "From an LED perspective, the rate of adoption is extremely high because the entire lighting industry has done a great job of educating the consumer."

As you start planning for 2019, you should know that digital’s seemingly exponential growth is continuing, so you should plan on spending more on online efforts. For reference, 82 percent of marketers plan to spend more of their budget on digital media, according to Nielson’s 2018 CMO report.
