Researchers have developed a new method for preparing mesenchymal stem cells that not only leads to the production of more native stem cells, but also labels them with a Food and Drug Administration-approved iron-oxide nanoparticle. The technology could allow researchers to track the cells in vivo using magnetic resonance imaging during preclinical and clinical trials.

The International Society for Stem Cell Research released an update to its guidelines, calling for research institutions to construct oversight committees to handle stem cell and embryo research conducted by their scientists. Other studies have shown that only 4 percent of cancer patients enroll in clinical trials nationally each year.

A viral protein known as NS5 is a promising target for vaccines against Zika and related viruses, according to National Institutes of Health scientists and colleagues at Mount Sinai's Icahn School of Medicine. Their study, published online May 19 in Cell Host & Microbe, suggests that altering or removing the NS5 protein from Zika virus would allow the human body's own immune defenses to attack the virus.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to provide $622.1 million to control the spread of Zika virus, far below President Barack Obama's request and lower than Senate legislation. The bill passed the Republican-controlled House 241 to 184, largely along party lines, and sets up a confrontation with both the Republican-majority Senate and Democratic Obama administration.

Point-of-care testing and remote patient monitoring are two technologies that could be disruptive to the clinical laboratory industry, particularly if use of these devices was to reduce the volume of patient specimens that are referred to the nation's large, centralized medical laboratories. This is one reason why savvy pathologists watch the stream of new products designed to allow athletes and consumers to monitor their fitness and other characteristics of good health.
