University of Liverpool via Infection Control Today
A new study, published in Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy and conducted by a University of Liverpool research consortium, has helped develop a new treatment option for some multidrug-resistant infections. Antimicrobial resistance is a global and serious threat to human health that is making previously easy to treat infections harder to treat, and, according to the World Health Organization, the cause of 25,000 deaths annually in European Union alone.

The most iconic thing about measles is the rash — red, livid splotches that make infection painfully visible. But that rash, and even the fever, coughing and watery, sore eyes, are all distractions from the virus’s real harm — an all-out attack on the immune system. Measles silently wipes clean the immune system’s memory of past infections. In this way, the virus can cast a long and dangerous shadow for months, or even years, scientists are finding. The resulting “immune amnesia” leaves people vulnerable to other viruses and bacteria that cause pneumonia, ear infections and diarrhea.

Scientists working with raw genetic material and the creation of DNA sequences must take precautions to ensure they don’t accidentally produce potential biohazards, such as toxins or pathogens that could lead to contagious diseases and death among plant and animal hosts. Not only could this type of incident lead to significant financial losses, as host organisms are killed — it can also pose a danger to those working with these materials in the lab.

Researchers have discovered one way the bacterium that causes Legionnaires’ disease successfully lives in contaminated water supplies: by killing off its neighbors. The study, published in the journal eLife by scientists at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, reveals the unexpected molecular poison the bacterium uses to do so — and suggests a potential way to prevent an illness that strikes about 6,000 people each year in the U.S.

The global spread of antibiotic resistance is a major public health issue and a priority for international microbiology research. In his paper published in the journal Science, Christian Lesterlin, Inserm researcher at Lyon’s Molecular Microbiology and Structural Biochemistry laboratory (CNRS/Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1), and his team were able to film the process of antibiotic resistance acquisition in real time, discovering a key but unexpected player in its maintenance and spread within bacterial populations.
