Understanding pneumococcal population dynamics will drive an effective next-generation vaccine design, according to a study published in the Lancet Infectious Diseases. Although pneumococcal conjugate vaccines have significantly reduced the global burden of invasive pneumococcal disease in children by targeting up to 13 pneumococcal serotypes that account for most of the disease in infants, invasive pneumococcal disease remains a health priority because of an increase in disease incidence caused by nonvaccine serotypes or serotype replacement.

The number of measles cases reported in the U.S. has fallen recently, but experts say it's not time to declare victory. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the number of measles cases in 2019 reached 1,109 across 28 states as of early July.

In this population-based interrupted time series study, researchers analyzed changes in the community in the prescribing of broad-spectrum antimicrobials and resistance in people hospitalized with community-associated coliform bacteraemia relative to a primary care stewardship intervention. Findings revealed that a previously rising rate of fluoroquinolone resistance was reversed and previously increasing rates of cephalosporin and co-amoxiclav resistance plateaued.

A research letter from World Health Organization (WHO) researchers published recently in Emerging Infectious Diseases shows that as many as 1,465 cases and 293 to 520 deaths from MERS-CoV may have been averted since 2016. "We believe that affected countries are reducing the global threat of MERS through addressing knowledge gaps with regard to transmission, enhancing surveillance and strengthening the ability to detect cases early and contain outbreaks through improved infection prevention and control measures in hospitals," authors from the WHO and the University of Oxford write.

A million times a year, pneumonia sends American adults to the hospital. And while antibiotics help save lives, a new study shows two-thirds receive more antibiotics than they probably need. It’s not the care that happens in the hospital that leads to over-treatment, the study finds. Rather, it’s the prescriptions that patients receive as they head home from the hospital. In all, 93% of the overly long antibiotic prescriptions given to pneumonia patients were written at hospital discharge.

In a study in Brazil, Zika virus infection in pregnant women was linked to below-average neurologic development in 32% of their children up to age 3, even though few of the infants had microcephaly, one of the hallmarks of Zika infection.
The study focused on 216 offspring of Zika-infected pregnant women who were identified during an epidemic in Rio de Janeiro in 2015 and 2016, according to a letter published in Nature Medicine. It was authored by researchers from UCLA and colleagues from Brazil, Austria and Germany.

Earlier in 2019, the World Health Organization pointed to vaccine hesitancy as one of the top threats to global health in 2019. This uncertainty surrounding childhood vaccinations is a growing concern in the U.S. as outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases, including measles and hepatitis A, have become increasingly more common.
