The big Escherichia coli epidemic in Germany comes at a time when methods of testing for pathogenic
E. coli are changing, posing some challenges for public health officials intent on detecting E. coli outbreaks quickly and monitoring trends as accurately as possible. Clinical laboratories are increasingly using enzyme immunoassay tests to detect Shiga toxin–producing E. coli, either along with or instead of the traditional method of growing the bacterium in a culture.

At a hospital in central Haiti, a team from Massachusetts General Hospital is among those helping to fight a cholera outbreak that has rebounded since it first struck the country last October. Five nurses and one doctor arrived to work 10-hour days at the hospital, caring for cholera-stricken residents who arrive in droves. Using blood tests to diagnose active tuberculosis often leads to misdiagnosis, say the World Health Organization, who urge all countries to stop using the tests and rely instead on accurate
microbiological or molecular tests. This is the first time the global health agency has issued a "negative" policy recommendation relating to TB, something they say "underscores the organization's determination" to advise governments when there is strong evidence that widespread practice is doing more harm than good.
