Bypassing stem cells,
scientist make neurons directly from human skin
ScienceDaily
Share

Researchers have come up with a recipe for making functional neurons directly from human skin cells,
including those taken from patients with Alzheimer's disease. The new method may offer a critical short cut for generating neurons for replacement therapies of the future. Already, the converted neurons are beginning to yield insights into what goes wrong in the Alzheimer's brain and how diseased neurons might respond to treatment.

Report: Exercise benefits cancer survivors
Medical News Today
Share

If exercise were a cancer drug, it would be a blockbuster, appears to be the conclusion of a new review on the benefits of physical activity to people surviving and living beyond cancer. In a report
released, the leading charity Macmillan Cancer Support firmly sweeps aside the tradition that cancer patients should "rest up" and "take it easy." It urges doctors and nurses to prescribe physical activity to patients "at all stages of cancer from initial diagnosis through to the later stages." However, despite the emergence of this evidence, many health professionals are failing to tell their cancer patients about the benefits of exercise.

Study: Counseling may help women at risk for breast cancer gene
HealthDay News via USA Today

Although women whose mothers had breast cancer may worry about developing cancer themselves, many do not fully understand when and why they should be screened or their options to reduce their risk for the disease, a new study suggests. "Young, high-risk women have little knowledge about the probabilities and options for managing the cancers for which their risks are remarkably increased. Further, many report intense anxiety related
to their potential cancer development," principal investigator Andrea Farkas Patenaude said in an institute news release.

Inappropriate use of blood cell booster widespread
Reuters Health

Costly drugs that boost red blood cells are being routinely misused in cancer patients, raising concerns about side effects and wasted resources, researchers
say. A quarter of the time, they found patients got the so-called erythropoiesis-stimulating agents for no more than a week, which is too short to do much good.
