Most of the patients stayed better five years after the transplant and were able to avoid drug treatment that cost up to $500,000 yearly, reports a new study from Northwestern Medicine and Mayo Clinic.

The single-center retrospective studies were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of using shorter antibiotic courses in the treatment of bacteremia.

The U.S. will maintain its measles elimination status, the Department of Health and Human Services has announced. The announcement came just one day after health officials in New York State declared the end of the Rockland County outbreak, which persisted for nearly one year. “We are very pleased that the measles outbreak has ended in New York and that measles is still considered eliminated in the United States. This result is a credit to the cooperative work by local and state health departments, community and religious leaders, other partners and the [U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention],” said HHS Secretary Alex Azar in a statement.

New research presented recently at IDWeek 2019 indicates that nearly 4% of the patients given antibiotics unnecessarily before dental procedures experience serious adverse events, including allergic reactions and emergency room visits. The findings are a follow-up to a study published in May that found that nearly 81% of antibiotics prescribed before dental procedures are unnecessary.
