Futurism
For the first time, scientists grew an embryo in a lab using only stem cells — no sperm or eggs required.
The mouse embryos weren’t perfect, according to OneZero, and none of them developed into living, breathing, lab-grown mice.

Antimicrobial stewardship can be defined as the approach to promoting and monitoring judicious use of antimicrobials to preserve their future effectiveness. With demands on microbiological clinical services at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals increasing over recent years, requests for clinical advice could no longer be facilitated by a direct telephone call from clinical teams to the pathology team.

According to data published in BMC Infectious Diseases, nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor resistance has increased among newly diagnosed infants who live in a high HIV prevalence setting where maternal antiretroviral therapy coverage increased across years.
Researchers conducted a sub-study of three nationally representative cross-sectional surveys in South Africa in 2010, 2011 to 2012 and 2012 to 2013 to address several questions surrounding mother to child transmission of HIV.

As physicians and health care organizations search for better ways to curb the use of antibiotics and the growth of antimicrobial resistance, a new study suggests sepsis is one area that might be ripe for better antimicrobial stewardship. Specifically, the study argues pathogen-negative cases of sepsis, where the current antibiotic treatment time ranges from four to nine days, are a good opportunity that warrants attention.

A study of Veterans Administration long-term care facilities has found that active surveillance and use of contact precautions had no impact on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus acquisition and infection. The study, published recently in Clinical Infectious Diseases, looked at more than 75,000 patient admissions at 74 VA LTCFs over a five-year period and found that patients were no more likely to acquire MRSA in facilities that require healthcare workers to use gowns and gloves when caring for MRSA patients than in facilities that use standard precautions.

Bacteria that evolve in natural environments — rather than laboratory tests — may become resistant to phage treatments without losing their virulence, new research shows.
The University of Exeter study examined why Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria develop resistance to phages (viruses that kill bacteria) in different ways in labs and the real world.

Infection Control Today
Antibiotics are a lifesaver — except when they stop working — and, unfortunately, that is happening more often as multidrug resistant bacteria render many previously useful antimicrobials ineffective. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about two million people in the U.S. get an antibiotic-resistant infection every year, and the rise of such infections has prompted the World Health Organization to list antimicrobial resistance among the top 10 global health threats for 2019.
