In Memory of Woody Vogt, GBA President 2018-2019

On June 6, 2022, Woodward L. “Woody” Vogt, P.E., D. GE, F. GBA, F. ACI, F. ASCE, F. ASTM (Paradigm Consultants/CMT) passed away after complications associated with brain surgery that was performed in March.

Woody served as GBA’s President in 2018-2019 after many years of service as Director.  Before joining the GBA Board of Directors, Mr. Vogt was a founding member of GBA’s Construction Materials Engineering and Testing (CoMET) Business Committee and chaired the GBA Accreditation and Certification Task Force.  Most recently, he served as a Vice Chair of GBA’s Resource Collaboration Committee.

Annual Report Issued

GBA’s Annual Report was prepared for the Board of Directors and all Member-Firms to report progress and highlight key accomplishments of the Association during the fiscal year 2021-2022. It is intended to keep all members current with significant accomplishments of the Board, Committees and all the volunteers that support it.

Nominate a Peer for Ethics Award

Honor an engineer-leader for a specific accomplishment or for lifetime achievements that demonstrate superior ethics and leadership in professional practice or service to the public.

In 2005, GBA and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) instituted the Professional Practice Ethics and Leadership Award to promote and recognize civil engineering leadership in professional practice and ethics. The Foundation for Professional Practice, also established by GBA and ASCE, donated the funds to support this annual award which recognizes an engineer-leader for a specific accomplishment or for lifetime achievements that demonstrate superior ethics and leadership while participating in professional practice or service to the public.

Nominate a colleague by July 8 for the 2022 Professional Practice Ethics and Leadership Award.   The winner will be presented a certificate and an honorarium.  Send award submissions to, or questions about the award to

WSP Strikes $1.8B Deal for Wood’s Environment & Infrastructure Business

GovCon Wire

Canada-based engineering services provider WSP Global has agreed to acquire John Wood Group’s environment and infrastructure business for approximately $1.81 billion in a transaction that would expand WSP’s earth and environment consulting practice in the U.S.

WSP said Wednesday it expects the transaction to close in the fourth quarter of 2022, subject to approval by Wood’s shareholders, separation of the E&I business through a reorganization, regulatory clearances and other customary closing conditions.


Klohn Crippen Berger Announces Retirement of Vice President, Technical, Dr. Alex Sy, P.Eng.

After a 45-year career with the company, Klohn Crippen Berger (KCB) announces the retirement of Vice President, Technical, Alex Sy. The company announced on May 4 that Bob Chambers will take over the role.

A globally recognized leader in geotechnical and geoseismic engineering, Alex has worked across Canada and internationally on a wide range of projects including heavy industrial foundations, transportation infrastructures, hydroelectric and water retention dams, and mine tailings dams. He has extensive experience involving in-situ testing, seismic liquefaction analyses, dynamic soil-structure interaction analyses, ground improvement, and the design and testing of pile foundations. He serves on Independent Technical Review Boards for several major water supply projects and mine tailing storage facilities around the world.

Jonathan Ritchie, PE Returns to GAI Consultants

GAI Consultants, Inc. (GAI)  announced that Jonathan Ritchie, PE has rejoined the firm’s Power Generation Business Sector as a Senior Engineering Manager in its Warrenton, VA office. Mr. Ritchie has over 17 years of experience providing civil engineering and client management for water resources, solid waste facility, traditional and renewable energy, and site development projects.


Steve Bryant Joins NOVA, New Regional Manager for the Carolinas


We couldn’t be more excited to announce this much needed addition to the NOVA team. Join us in extending a warm welcome to Steve Bryant, our new Regional Manager for the Carolinas. A professional engineer in Georgia, Washington, Oregon, Montana and Colorado, Steve is also a registered geotechnical engineer in the State of Oregon and will be professional engineer soon in the Carolinas and several other southern states.

Pennoni, a multidisciplinary consulting engineering firm headquartered in Philadelphia, is delighted to announce the promotion of several officers across the firm. Chief operating officer, David Pennoni, announced the promotions at the firm’s first quarter town hall meeting.

New Staff Engineers

We are pleased to announce the addition of Daniel J. Thomas, E.I.T. (left), and Brendan A. Holbrook as staff engineers.

Thomas is a graduate of Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering. His work will include groundwater and soil contamination investigations and environmental site assessments. He will also complete field investigations in addition to data collection and interpretation, and sampling of soil and groundwater on various environmental investigation and restoration projects. 

Holbrook will join the engineering department where he will assume municipal engineering duties, including design, engineering support and field support for construction projects. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Michigan State University.
