In December 2019, the Comprehensive Immunosuppressive Drug Coverage for Kidney Transplant Patients Act of 2019, also known as the Immuno Bill, was introduced in the House of Representatives. This legislation would extend Medicare coverage of immunosuppressive drugs for kidney transplant recipients, which is currently limited to just 36 months. We need your help to make this a reality! The AST has made it easy to quickly contact your Members of Congress, so take action today.

Over the long-term, graft survival may be impacted by factors such as declining adherence, which may be affected by complex dosing regimens and neurotoxicities. Studies show a direct correlation between rejection losses and nonadherence, which is also proven to increase over time. Review 2-year published data and see the results achieved at 2 years in de novo kidney transplant patients.

Machine learning utilizes artificial intelligence to generate predictive models efficiently and more effectively than conventional methods through detection of hidden patterns within large data sets. With this in mind, there are several areas within hepatology where these methods can be applied.

Patients with liver disease acquire complex changes in their hemostatic system, which results in a fragile rebalanced status. The status of the fibrinolytic system is controversial, as is the role of fibrinolytic dysfunction in bleeding and thrombosis in patients with cirrhosis. Here, we aimed to determine fibrinolytic status and its relationship with outcome in acutely ill patients with cirrhosis.

Since 2005, the United States donor heart allocation system assigned patients awaiting transplantation with measurably distinct outcomes into a single high urgency priority status. In this old system, patients in cardiogenic shock as well as ambulatory stable patients with complications of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) were allocated to a similar status of highest urgency and competed equally for donor organs.

Through multiple mechanisms, regulatory B cells (Breg) have been shown to play an important role in the development of allograft tolerance. However, a careful understanding of the role of antigen‐specificity in Breg‐mediated allograft tolerance has remained elusive. In experimental models of islet and cardiac transplantation, it has been established that Bregs can be induced in vivo by anti‐CD45RB ± anti‐TIM1antibody treatment, resulting in prolonged, Breg‐dependent allograft tolerance.

Although expedited placement could ameliorate stagnant kidney utilization, precisely identifying difficult‐to‐place organs is crucial to mitigate potential harms associated with this policy. Existing algorithms have only leveraged structured data from the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network; however, detailed, free text case information about a donor exists. No known research exists about the utility of these data. We developed a model to predict the probability of delay or discard for adult deceased kidney donors between 2010 and 2018, leveraging donor free text data.
