The UCLA Immunogenetics Center (UIC) provides comprehensive testing for organ and tissue transplantation. Transplant testing has a long history at UCLA. HLA typing was pioneered here in the 1960's. The development of the microcytoxicity test in 1964 marked the beginning of international testing and standardization of HLA typing. The UCLA Immunogenetics Center has retained its leadership position in HLA research, and in the development of accompanying diagnostic testing. MORE

The shortfall between the demand and the availability of organs for transplantation has never been greater. Tackling this mismatch requires a multifaceted approach, which addresses issues at all levels. CEOT 2016 focuses on how the effects of redistricting, the possibility of incentives, and how the use of marginal donors can and will impact the donor organ shortage problem.

Transplant Infectious Disease
Little is known about the epidemiology of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) bacteriuria following kidney transplantation. We determined the incidence of post-transplant CRKP bacteriuria in adults who underwent kidney transplant from 2007 to 2010 at 2 New York City centers. We conducted a case–control study to identify factors associated with CRKP bacteriuria compared with carbapenem-susceptible K. pneumoniae (CSKP) bacteriuria, assessed whether CRKP bacteriuria was associated with mortality or graft failure, and compared outcomes of treated episodes of CRKP and CSKP bacteriuria.

The key lesions in antibody-mediated kidney transplant rejection (ABMR) are microcirculation inflammation (peritubular capillaritis and/or glomerulitis lesions, abbreviated "pg") and glomerular double contours (cg lesions). We used these features to explore subphenotypes in 164 indication biopsies with ABMR-related diagnoses: 137 ABMR (109 pure and 28 mixed with T cell–mediated rejection [TCMR]) and 27 transplant glomerulopathy (TG), identified from prospective multicenter studies.

Solid organ transplant recipients have increased colorectal cancer risk. We assessed CRC risk among transplant recipients and identified factors contributing to this association. The U.S. transplant registry was linked to 15 population-based cancer registries (1987–2010). We compared CRC risk in recipients to the general population by using standardized incidence ratios and identified CRC risk factors by using Poisson regression.

Heart transplant remains the definitive therapy for advanced heart failure patients but is limited by organ availability. We identified a large number of donor hearts from our organ procurement organization being exported to other regions. We engaged a multidisciplinary team including transplant surgeons, cardiologists, and our OPO colleagues to identify opportunities to improve our center-specific organ utilization rate. We performed a retrospective analysis of donor offers before and after institution of a novel review process.

Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common complication of HCV infection leading to liver transplantation. We evaluated the impact of aetiology of liver disease on patient and graft survival following liver transplantation for HCC. From the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (2002–2011), all adults who underwent liver transplantation for HCC were retrospectively included. Aetiology of liver disease was grouped into HCV, HBV, HCV–HBV co-infection and nonviral liver disease.
