The UCLA Immunogenetics Center (UIC) provides comprehensive testing for organ and tissue transplantation. Transplant testing has a long history at UCLA. HLA typing was pioneered here in the 1960's. The development of the microcytoxicity test in 1964 marked the beginning of international testing and standardization of HLA typing. The UCLA Immunogenetics Center has retained its leadership position in HLA research, and in the development of accompanying diagnostic testing. MORE

The shortfall between the demand and the availability of organs for transplantation has never been greater. Tackling this mismatch requires a multifaceted approach, which addresses issues at all levels. CEOT 2016 focuses on how the effects of redistricting, the possibility of incentives, and how the use of marginal donors can and will impact the donor organ shortage problem.

Redistricting, which means sharing organs in novel districts developed through mathematical optimization, has been proposed to reduce pervasive geographic disparities in access to liver transplantation. The economic impact of redistricting was evaluated with two distinct data sources, Medicare claims and the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC).

Continuous-flow (CF) left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are standard of care for bridging patients to cardiac transplantation. However, existing data about preoperative factors influencing early post-transplant survival in these patients are limited. We sought to determine risk factors for mortality using a large international database.

Data regarding the onset of puberty in children receiving mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitors are limited. Kidney transplant patients aged less than 14 years were analyzed retrospectively to a maximum age of 18 years, with a minimal observation period of 1 year. Immunosuppression comprised (1) standard CNI-based regimen or (2) low-exposure mTOR inhibitor with reduced-exposure CNI, initiated either de novo or in the maintenance phase.

Cardiovascular (CV) assessment in prerenal transplant patients varies by center. Current guidelines recommend stress testing for candidates if less than or equal to 3 CV risk factors exist. We evaluated the CV assessment and management in 685 patients referred for kidney transplant over a 7-year period. All patients had CV risk factors, and the most common cause of end-stage renal disease was diabetes.

The influence of varying levels of pulmonary hypertension (PH) on survival in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is not well defined. The United Network for Organ Sharing database was queried from 2005 to 2013 to identify first-time lung transplant candidates listed for lung transplantation who were tracked from waitlist entry date until death or censoring to determine the influence of PH on patients with advanced lung disease. Using data for right heart catheterization measurements, mild PH was defined as mean pulmonary artery pressure of 25 mm Hg or more, and severe as 35 mm Hg or more.
