The UCLA Immunogenetics Center (UIC) provides comprehensive testing for organ and tissue transplantation. Transplant testing has a long history at UCLA. HLA typing was pioneered here in the 1960's. The development of the microcytoxicity test in 1964 marked the beginning of international testing and standardization of HLA typing. The UCLA Immunogenetics Center has retained its leadership position in HLA research, and in the development of accompanying diagnostic testing. MORE

The shortfall between the demand and the availability of organs for transplantation has never been greater. Tackling this mismatch requires a multifaceted approach, which addresses issues at all levels. CEOT 2016 focuses on how the effects of redistricting, the possibility of incentives, and how the use of marginal donors can and will impact the donor organ shortage problem.

Voriconazole is a triazole antifungal used to prevent and treat invasive fungal infections after lung transplantation, but it has been associated with an increased risk of developing cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Despite widespread use, there are no clear guidelines for optimal prophylactic regimens that balance the competing risks and benefits.

Liver Transplantation
Biliary complications are regarded as the Achilles' heel of liver transplantation, especially for living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) due to smaller, multiple ducts and difficult ductal anatomy. Overall biliary complications reported in most series are between 10 percent and 30 percent. This study describes our modified technique of biliary anastomosis and its effects on incidence of biliary complications.

Recent studies have highlighted the need for better understanding of the long-term health outcomes of living donors. Barriers to establishment of a dedicated long-term donor follow-up data system in the United States include infrastructure costs and donor retention. We propose providing all previous and future living donors with a lifelong health insurance benefit for the primary purpose of facilitating acquisition of health information after donation as an alternative to establishment of a dedicated donor follow-up data system.

Allocation policies for liver transplantation underwent significant changes in June 2013 with the introduction of Share 35. We aimed to examine the effect of Share 35 on regional variation in posttransplant outcomes. We examined two patient groups from the United Network for Organ Sharing dataset; a pre–Share 35 group composed of patients transplanted between June 17, 2012, and June 17, 2013 (n = 5523), and a post–Share group composed of patients transplanted between June 18, 2013, and June 18, 2014 (n = 5815).

Lifetime Data Analysis
The competing risks data structure arises frequently in clinical and epidemiologic studies. In such settings, the cumulative incidence function is often used to describe the ultimate occurrence of a particular cause of interest. If the objective of the analysis is to compare subgroups of patients with respect to cumulative incidence, imbalance with respect to group-specific covariate distributions must generally be factored out, particularly in observational studies.
