Dates for the COP Executive Committee Election

The election for COP Executive Committee members (Co-Chairs, Members-Large, and Early Career Members-at-Large) will be open from Monday, April 8, through Monday, April 22, 2019. All COPs except for the Advanced Practice Providers have openings on their Executive Committees. On April 8, voters will receive an email from Simply Voting providing them with their unique voting credentials along with instructions on how to vote online.

The Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute is accepting nominations for the 2020 Thomas E. Starzl Prize in Surgery and Immunology, awarded annually to a national or international leader in the field of organ transplantation and immunology. The prize consists of a crystal award, an honorarium of $10,000, and travel expenses to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in the spring of 2020 to formally receive the award and to present the Thomas E. Starzl Prize in Surgery and Immunology lecture. The winner will also participate in related activities and meet informally with faculty, post-doctoral fellows and students.

Liquid biopsies, based on cell free DNA and proteins, have shown the potential to detect early stage cancers of diverse tissue types. However, most of these studies were retrospective, using individuals previously diagnosed with cancer as cases and healthy individuals as controls. Here, we developed a liquid biopsy assay, named the hepatocellular carcinoma screen, to identify HCC from the surface antigen of hepatitis B virus positive asymptomatic individuals in the community population.

Post‐transplant‐lymphoproliferative‐disorder is a devastating complication of organ transplantation. In a hospital‐based registry, we identified biopsy‐proven cases of PTLD among children over a 15‐year period and reviewed trends in PTLD rates, the sites of involvement and the associated survival rates. Cases that were included had at least one year of follow‐up after the diagnosis of PTLD.

The National Surgical Quality Program Transplant program was designed by transplant surgeons from the ground up to track post‐transplant outcomes beyond basic recipient and graft survival. After an initial pilot phase, the program has expanded to 29 participating sites and enrolled more than 4,300 recipient‐donor pairs into the database, including 1,444 completed liver transplant cases.
