Dear Kidney Transplant Providers,
We are developing an online shared decision aid to help kidney transplant providers effectively communicate treatment options and individualized waitlist outcomes to U.S. kidney transplant candidates using calculators from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients. We are conducting focus groups to get feedback from transplant nephrologists and surgeons at the upcoming ATC meeting. The focus groups will take place Monday, May 1 from 6-7 AM or Tuesday, May 2 from 1-2 PM at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place. Breakfast or lunch will be provided. If you are interested or would like additional information, please email Dr. Allyson Hart at hart1044@umn.edu.

We performed orthogonal technology comparisons of concurrent peripheral blood and biopsy tissue samples from 69 kidney transplant recipients who underwent comprehensive algorithm-driven clinical phenotyping. The sample cohort included patients with normal protocol biopsies and stable transplant (sTx) function (n = 25), subclinical acute rejection (subAR, n = 23), and clinical acute rejection (cAR, n = 21).

Transplant Infectious Disease
In 2013, guidelines were released for reducing the risk of viral bloodborne pathogen transmission through organ transplantation. Eleven criteria were described that result in a donor being designated at increased infectious risk. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) transmission risk from an increased-risk donor (IRD), despite negative nucleic acid testing (NAT), likely varies based on behavior type and timing.

Despite generally positive outcomes and high rates of satisfaction, living kidney donors are at risk for both medical and psychosocial problems. In this review, the authors summarize non–end-stage renal disease (ESRD) risks for donors and describe limitations to the data. We review the evidence of medical risks (e.g. increased cardiovascular disease and mortality, preeclampsia) and psychosocial risks (e.g. mood disturbance, financial burden).
