In India, thousands of patients die every year awaiting an organ transplant. Others turn to organ traffickers to buy organs from the poor who have been tricked into “donating their organs.” These illegal donations are done in terrible hospitals, with bad hygiene and unsanitary conditions leading to poor outcomes for both donor and recipient. Join MOHAN USA for an educational session and a charity fundraiser.
The event is intended to coincide with the 2018 American Transplant Congress (ATC) in Seattle and will be held at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center, approximately 7 miles from the Washington Convention Center, venue of the ATC. Transportation will be provided.

In approximately two weeks, a new version of the SRTR beta site will be available for review and comment. A beta version of the SRTR website containing the 5-tier outcome assessment has been available online over the past year. During that time, SRTR has worked with HRSA and the SRTR Visiting Committee (SVC) to consider feedback. Transplant professionals, researchers, and patients and their family members submitted comments. SRTR has been working with HRSA and the SVC to implement a series of changes in response to feedback received.
SRTR will be available at the 2018 American Transplant Congress (ATC) meeting (June 2-6), booth #202, to answer any questions. Review the current version of the beta site at beta.srtr.org.

Research describing the long‐standing racial disparities in transplantation is important, but we need more studies that go beyond reporting the problem,” says Rachel E. Patzer, Ph.D., MPH, director of the Transplant Health Services and Outcomes Research Program at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. Tanjala Purnell, Ph.D., MPH, agrees; she is assistant professor of surgery in the Division of Transplantation at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, and lead author of the most recent high‐profile paper describing the persistence of disparities in live donor kidney transplantation.

"Transplantation is one of the only areas of medicine where there is rationing,” says Jean C. Emond, MD, president of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS). A transplant can occur only when a scarce item has been generously donated as a public good. The fair distribution of this scarce item requires layers of political and ethical protections that have been created by multiple stakeholders.

Liver Transplantation
Although hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has become a common indication for liver transplantation (LT), intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) and combined hepatocellular carcinoma–cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC‐CCA) are historically contraindicated due to their aggressive behavior. On the basis of recent experiences, some groups have proposed a clinical trial investigating the role of LT for patients with early cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), defined as a single lesion less than or equal to 2 cm.

Effective immunosupression management is central to achieving optimal outcomes in liver transplant recipients. Current immunosuppression regimens and agents are highly effective in minimizing graft loss due to acute and chronic rejection but can also produce a substantial array of toxicities. The utilization of immunosuppression varies widely, contributing to the wide disparities in posttransplant outcomes reported between transplant centers.

Studies on living donors from the donors’ perspective show that the donation process involves both positive and negative feelings involving vulnerability. Qualitative studies of living kidney, liver, and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell donors have not previously been merged in the same analysis. Therefore, our aim was to synthesize current knowledge of these donors’ experiences to deepen understanding of the meaning of being a living donor for the purpose of saving or extending someone's life.
