HSC transplants give glioblastoma patients longer life, tolerance to alkylating agent chemotherapy
Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News

Scientists report positive data from a first-in-man study evaluating the bone marrow-protective effects of genetically modified autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplants in glioblastoma patients treated using chemotherapy and benzylguanine. The results, published in Science Translational Medicine, showed that of the three patients given the transplants prior to combination therapy, two survived much longer than average, and the third remains alive with no disease progression almost three years later.

Age may no longer be a barrier in kidney donation

The overhauled United Network for Organ Sharing kidney transplant allocation guidelines will likely remove a controversial age-matching component from its algorithm, researchers said here. The requirement that 80 percent of deceased-donor kidneys be matched with a patient whose age is within 15 years, plus or minus, the donor's age will be taken out, largely because of substantial public criticism, Kenneth Andreoni, M.D., of Ohio State University and chair of the kidney guideline committee, said during a session at the National Kidney Foundation meeting.

The odds were not on Nathaniel Zavin's side. Born with only one bum kidney, the Manhattan, N.Y., teen had already gone through two transplants since age 5 when he learned he would need a third.
It was 2009 and Zavin had just started his freshman year at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, when he went into kidney failure.

Molecularly engineered islet cell clusters for diabetes mellitus treatment
Cell Transplantation
Share

Pancreatic islet transplantation is a promising method for curing diabetes mellitus. We proposed in this study a molecularly engineered islet cell clusters that could overcome problems posed by islet transplantation circumstances and host's immune reactions. A gene containing highly releasable Exendin-4, an insulinotropic protein, was delivered into single islet cells to enhance glucose sensitivity; thereafter, the cells were reaggregated into small size ICCs.
