AST
The AST mourns the passing of one of its past presidents: William Harmon, MD. Dr. Harmon's career as a pediatric nephrologist demonstrated a lifelong commitment to the care and study of children with end stage renal disease (ESRD) and transplantation. [More information]

The UCLA Immunogenetics Center (UIC) provides comprehensive testing for organ and tissue transplantation. Transplant testing has a long history at UCLA. HLA typing was pioneered here in the 1960's. The development of the microcytoxicity test in 1964 marked the beginning of international testing and standardization of HLA typing. The UCLA Immunogenetics Center has retained its leadership position in HLA research, and in the development of accompanying diagnostic testing. MORE

The allocation system of donor organs for transplantation may affect their scarcity. In 2008, Israel's Parliament passed the Organ Transplantation Law, which grants priority on waiting lists for transplants to candidates who are first-degree relatives of deceased organ donors or who previously registered as organ donors themselves. Several public campaigns have advertised the existence of the law since November 2010. We evaluated the effect of the law using all deceased donation requests made in Israel during the period 1998–2015.

Pediatric Transplantation
The purposes of this study were to analyze the effects of an ERS on time to transplantation and to describe our center's experience with OLT for HB. Patients who received OLT for HB between 2000 and 2013 were included. Patient and allograft characteristics, chemotherapy regimens, and prior surgical therapies were examined. The interval between diagnosis and OLT prior to and following the institution of an ERS for transplant was compared. Survival and tumor recurrence were analyzed.

Current Opinion in Organ Transplantation
Allograft vasculopathy is the leading cause of late allograft loss following solid organ transplantation. Ischemia reperfusion injury and donor-specific antibody-induced complement activation confer heightened risk for allograft vasculopathy via numerous innate immune mechanisms, including MyD88, high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), and complement-induced noncanonical nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) signaling.

Journal of Clinical Anesthesia
We describe a case of living unrelated renal transplantation from a non–malignant hyperthermia (MH) susceptible donor to an MH-susceptible recipient, along with its intraoperative and perioperative considerations. The renal transplant recipient reported a personal history of MH requiring intensive care unit admission. A nontriggering anesthetic was therefore chosen for the unrelated donor to avoid possible triggering via the transplanted kidney to the MH-susceptible recipient.

Kidney donors can develop end-stage renal disease (ESRD) after donation, but the outcomes of those who do remain poorly characterized. Using United States Renal Data System and Scientific Registry for Transplant Research data, we compared access to kidney transplantation (KT), time from ESRD to listing, time from listing to KT, and post-KT graft failure and death between donors and matched nondonors with ESRD.
