The UCLA Immunogenetics Center (UIC) provides comprehensive testing for organ and tissue transplantation. Transplant testing has a long history at UCLA. HLA typing was pioneered here in the 1960's. The development of the microcytoxicity test in 1964 marked the beginning of international testing and standardization of HLA typing. The UCLA Immunogenetics Center has retained its leadership position in HLA research, and in the development of accompanying diagnostic testing. MORE

Every 10 minutes, someone is added to the waiting list for a life-saving organ transplant in the
United States. And every day, 22 people die while waiting. Today, the Obama Administration, as
well as dozens of companies, foundations, universities, hospitals, and patient advocacy
organizations are taking steps to change that by announcing a new set of actions that will build
on the Administration’s efforts to improve outcomes for individuals waiting for organ transplants
and support for living donors. The announced actions aim to increase the number of people who
register to become organ donors, increase the number of transplants and improve outcomes for
patients, and change what might be possible for future patients by facilitating breakthrough
research and development.

In recent years much research has been undertaken regarding the feasibility
of the human uterine transplant (UTx) as a treatment for absolute
uterine factor infertility (AUFI). Should it reach clinical application this procedure
would allow such individuals what is often a much-desired opportunity
to become not only social mothers (via adoption or traditional
surrogacy arrangements), or genetic and social mothers (through gestational
surrogacy) but mothers in a social, genetic and gestational sense.
Like many experimental transplantation procedures such as face, hand,
corneal and larynx transplants, UTx as a therapeutic option falls firmly
into the camp of the quality of life (QOL) transplant, undertaken with the
aim, not to save a life, but to enrich one.

As compared with traditional laparoscopy, robotic-assisted surgery provides better EndoWrist instruments and three-dimensional visualization of the operative field. Studies published so far indicate that living donor nephrectomy using the robot-assisted technique is safe, feasible, and provides remarkable advantages for the patients.
