As former House Of Representatives Speaker Tip O'Neill (MA) famously stated, "All Politics Are Local". Last Thursday night, AST lobbyist Bill Applegate hosted a political fundraising event for Congressman Kevin Yoder (R-KS), a senior member of the U.S. House of Representatives Appropriations Committee. The small political gathering was hosted in the owner's box for the St. Louis Cardinal's as they took on Congressman Yoder's hometown Kansas City Royals.

The UCLA Immunogenetics Center (UIC) provides comprehensive testing for organ and tissue transplantation. Transplant testing has a long history at UCLA. HLA typing was pioneered here in the 1960's. The development of the microcytoxicity test in 1964 marked the beginning of international testing and standardization of HLA typing. The UCLA Immunogenetics Center has retained its leadership position in HLA research, and in the development of accompanying diagnostic testing. MORE

Choosing between multiple living kidney donors, or evaluating offers in kidney paired donation, can be challenging because no metric currently exists for living donor quality. Furthermore, some deceased donor (DD) kidneys can result in better outcomes than some living donor kidneys, yet there is no way to compare them on the same scale. To better inform clinical decision-making, we created a living kidney donor profile index (LKDPI) on the same scale as the DD KDPI, using Cox regression and adjusting for recipient characteristics.

Early allograft dysfunction (EAD) after living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) has often been attributed to inadequate graft size, and termed small-for-size syndrome. Early allograft dysfunction definitions include a variable constellation of findings, including hyperbilirubinemia, coagulopathy, encephalopathy, and ascites formation. Among putative causes of EAD after LDLT are excessive portal pressure and/or flow. Our objective was to evaluate patterns of EAD after LDLT.

Two distinct pulmonary vascular disorders, hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) and portopulmonary hypertension (POPH) may occur as a consequence of hepatic parenchymal or vascular abnormalities. HPS and POPH have major clinical implications for liver transplantation. A European Respiratory Society Task Force on Pulmonary-Hepatic Disorders convened in 2002 to standardize the diagnosis and guide management of these disorders.
