U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has released the results of the 2017 Workplace Partnership for Life Hospital Organ Donation Campaign. More than 1,000 hospitals and transplant centers, including 296 small and rural hospitals, earned platinum, gold, silver or bronze recognition for their outstanding efforts to promote donation awareness and donor registration between October 2016 and April 2017. The Campaign which unites hospitals, healthcare associations, organ procurement organizations, and Donate Life America affiliates to work together to increase the number of people who register as organ, eye and tissue donors, realized a 13 percent increase in the number of hospitals that participated. Together, the Campaign partners added 26,975 donor registrations to state registries over a 7-month period.

It is estimated that solid organ transplant recipients have a two- to fourfold greater overall risk of malignancy than the general population. Some of the most common malignancies after transplant include skin cancers and posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder. In addition to known risk factors such as environmental exposures, genetics, and infection with oncogenic viruses, immunosuppression plays a large role in the development of cancer through the loss of the immunosurveillance process.

Panel-reactive antibodies are widely regarded as an important immunological risk factor for rejection and graft loss. The broadness of sensitization against HLA is most appropriately measured by the “calculated population-reactive antibodies” (cPRA) value. In this study, we investigated whether cPRA represent an immunological risk in times of sensitive and accurate determination of pretransplantation donor-specific HLA antibodies (DSA).

Liver Transplantation
Perioperative terlipressin (Tp) during living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) has been shown to reduce intraoperative portal pressures and improve renal function. Its role and safety profile have never been evaluated in a double-blind randomized controlled trial (RCT). The aim was to evaluate the hemodynamic effects, clinical benefits, and safety of perioperative Tp infusion in adult LDLT. This was a single-center double-blind RCT.

Liver transplantation (LT) is a well-established treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in carefully selected patients. Risk factors for tumors with poor prognostic features on explant have not been well described in a national cohort. We performed a retrospective cohort study of adult LT recipients with HCC transplanted from April 8, 2012 (when explant pathology in United Network for Organ Sharing [UNOS] became available) until Sept. 30, 2014.
