Two national webinars were held by UNOS this week to provide members an opportunity to learn about the proposals on the regional meeting non-discussion agenda and ask questions of the presenters. As a reminder, these proposals will not be presented or discussed during regional meetings. The seven public comment proposals on the non-discussion agenda were divided between two separate webinars. A link to each webinar recording was posted on the Transplant Pro website for review: http://transplantpro.org/community/regions/.

In honor of former AST president, Dan Salomon, the AST and the Salomon family have established a memorial fund entitled the Frontiers in Transplantation Endowment (FITE). The AST hopes to create a sustainable award that memorializes Dr. Salomon and funds transformative research. At the 2017 ATC in Chicago, Dan’s son, Marc, delivered an incredible speech about his father and the legacy he left behind. The AST and the supporters of the FITE have continued to honor Dan’s legacy with this fund, which has raised nearly $50,000 for transformative research.

Prophylaxis for graft portal/splenic venous thrombosis following pancreas transplant varies between institutions. Similarly, treatment of venous thrombosis ranges from early re-exploration to conservative management with anticoagulation. We wished to determine the prevalence of graft splenic vein (SV) thrombosis, as well as the clinical significance of non-occlusive thrombus observed on routine imaging.

Whether diabetes after kidney donation is associated with an accelerated GFR decay in the remaining kidney has not been studied. We determined the incidence of diabetes in kidney donors, and compared GFR change over time in diabetic to nondiabetic donors, in addition to the effect of diabetes mellitus (DM) on the development of proteinuria, hypertension, and end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) from spirometry is the most commonly used parameter to detect early allograft dysfunction after lung transplantation (LTx). There are concerns regarding its sensitivity. Nitrogen-multiple breath washout (N2-MBW) is sensitive at detecting early global (lung clearance index [LCI]) and acinar (Sacin) airway inhomogeneity.

With improving outcomes after thoracic transplantation, more children are surviving to adulthood and requiring specialized adult care. A systematic and effective program is essential to transition these patients from a pediatric to adult health care setting. In this review, we discuss the concept of transition and the factors leading to an effective transfer to an adult care provider, including administrative support, patient/provider preparation, and the navigation of potential barriers. Notably, there is a paucity of data for many details of transition, making this a significant opportunity for future research.

Hospitalization is known to occur frequently in the first 6 months following liver transplantation (LT). Using a novel data linkage between the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, our study has 2 objectives: (1) to determine risk factors for “early” hospitalization (ie, within 6 months of LT); and (2) to quantify the importance of hospitalization history in the first 6 months with respect to subsequent patient survival (ie, survival, conditional on surviving 6 months post-LT).
