White House
The White House convened a Summit earlier this summer that was focused on reducing the wait list for transplantation. During that meeting a number of organizations announced new initiatives that were innovative and collaborative and intended to address the organ shortage.
In follow-up from the Summit, the White House has publicly announced an opportunity for additional commitments focused on transplantation. We encourage everyone within the transplant community to support the efforts of the White House and consider submitting initiatives that can collectively demonstrate the great work the field is doing to address important issues.

There are 15 proposals currently out for public comment. Please take some time to review these proposals and share this information within your institutions. Feedback is critical to the policy development process. The AST's COPs are finalizing their review of proposals this week. Their responses will then go to the AST's Policy Committee for consideration to draft a unified AST response that will then go to the Board of Directors for approval before submission by the Oct. 14 deadline.

Transplant Infectious Disease
BK polyomavirus (BKV) infection and BKV nephropathy (BKVN) are risk factors for allograft function and survival. We retrospectively analyzed BK viremia and BKVN in 348 patients who received a kidney transplantation donated after brain death (n = 232) or living donation (n = 116) between 2008 and 2013. 266 patients were treated with standard immunosuppression consisting of basiliximab induction, calcineurin inhibitor (CNI), and mycophenolate (MPA, n = 219) or everolimus (n = 47).

We sought to evaluate whether television and cinematic coverage of brain death is educational or misleading. We identified 24 accessible productions that addressed brain death using the archives of the Paley Center for Media (160 000 titles) and the Internet Movie Database (3.7 million titles). Productions were reviewed by two board-certified neurologists.

Clinical Transplantation
Preoperative risk assessment of potential kidney transplant recipients often fails to adequately balance risk related to underlying comorbidities with the beneficial impact of kidney transplantation. We sought to develop a simple scoring system based on factors known at the time of patient assessment for placement on the waitlist to predict likelihood of severe adverse events one year post-transplant.

Recently, the p-value statistic has come under considerable criticism. Should this often misused and misunderstood method still be used in scientific papers? Also this month, we look at an “advanced donation program” through the National Kidney Registry that allows donors to donate an organ before their intended recipient receives a kidney.
