The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recently released a report on the opportunities for organ donor intervention research. The AST was pleased to serve as a sponsor for this study. The report recommends ways that organ donor intervention research can be done to honor the gifts of organs from deceased donors, provide transparency for transplant candidates, and sustain public trust in the donation and transplantation processes. “Transplantation is about giving the gift of life to very sick patients. Global Kidney Exchange (GKE) takes this a step further, by allowing transplant surgeons to give the gift of life to people around the world who are not only very sick and dying, but also too poor to afford the treatment necessary to live with damaged kidneys,” asserts Michael Rees, MD, PhD, professor of pathology at the University of Toledo in Ohio.

Long-term utilization of immunosuppression in organ transplant recipients (OTRs) leads to decreased immune-mediated tumor surveillance and development of malignant tumors. A delicate balance needs to be maintained in the intensity of immunosuppression to keep the risk of malignancy low without jeopardizing life-saving graft function. OTRs are prone to developing skin cancers that exhibit unique epidemiologic, pathophysiologic, and prognostic characteristics.

Delayed graft function (DGF) is very high in our center (70-80%), we usually receive a kidney for transplant after more than 22 hours of static cold ischemia time (CIT). Also, there is an inadequate care of the donors contributing to a high rate of delayed graft function (DGF). We decided to test whether machine perfusion (MP) after a cold ischemic time (CIT) improved the outcome of our transplant patients.

Although currently moderate and high intensity concurrent physical exercise is prescribed in populations with special needs due to its greater effect on physical condition and health-related quality of life (HRQOL), there are no data in the liver transplantation (LT) setting. The aim of this study is to evaluate changes in maximal strength, aerobic capacity, body composition, liver function, and HRQOL in LT patients after a moderate-to-high intensity combined resistance-endurance training.

Liver Transplantation
Liver transplantation (LT) is commonly used to treat patients with end-stage liver disease. The evolution of surgical techniques, endovascular methods, and medical care has led to a progressive decrease in posttransplant morbidity and mortality. Despite these improvements, a multidisciplinary approach to each patient remains essential as the early diagnosis and treatment of the complications of transplantation influence graft and patient survival.
