ABIM
The ABIM has moved to standardize publication dates of these modules so that they are aligned with their fiscal year. Starting in 2017, the ABIM will synchronize the availability of all Annual Update modules to launch on July 1. Each new module will be named for the two calendar years it will span during its period of availability. Please review the letter when you have a moment to ensure your organization has the most up-to-date information about these modules. As you may know, there have been many changes at ABIM in the past year as they have begun an organization-wide effort to transform MOC in partnership with the internal medicine community. They note continued commitment to working with the societies to share advance notice of any additional changes to their products and programs with the AST in order to help ensure mutual awareness and collaboration. Please review a letter from ABIM’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Richard Battaglia, on these upcoming changes.

High intrapatient variability (IPV) of tacrolimus concentrations is increasingly recognized as a predictor of poor outcome in solid organ recipients. How it relates to evolution of histology has not been explored. We analyzed tacrolimus IPV using the coefficient of variability (CV) from months 6–12 after transplantation in a cohort of 220 renal recipients for whom paired protocol biopsies at 3 mo and 2 years were available.

U.S. transplant centers are required to report cancers in transplant recipients to the transplant network. The accuracy and completeness of these data, collected in the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR), are unknown. We compared diagnoses in the SRTR and 15 linked cancer registries for colorectal, liver, lung, breast, prostate and kidney cancers; melanoma; and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL).

Ischemia-reperfusion injury–mediated primary graft dysfunction substantially hampers short- and long-term outcomes after lung transplantation. This condition continues to be diagnosed based on oxygen exchange parameters as well as radiological appearance, and therapeutic strategies are mostly supportive in nature. Identifying patients who may benefit from targeted therapy would therefore be highly desirable.

Urinary messenger RNA (mRNA) quantification is a promising method for noninvasive diagnosis of renal allograft rejection (AR), but the quantification of mRNAs in urine remains challenging due to degradation. RNA normalization may be warranted to overcome these issues, but the strategies of gene normalization have been poorly evaluated.

Liver Transplantation
During gestation, the woman's body undergoes various changes, and the line between physiology and pathology is very thin even in healthy women. Today, many of the liver transplant recipients are young women, who at one point in their lives may consider the possibility of pregnancy. Clinicians have to counsel them about the time of conception, the risk of miscarriage, the deterioration of the mother's health status, and the risk of birth defects.
