CDC
CDC encourages hospitals to take action, advises patients to seek care if ill
The CDC is actively working to address concerns related to contaminated heater-cooler units used during open heart surgery. There is a potential risk of infection from certain devices used during these surgeries due to bacterial contamination suspected to have been introduced during manufacturing. The bacteria, Mycobacterium chimaera, is a species of nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) often found in soil and water. In the environment, M. chimaera rarely makes healthy people sick.

James Pittman, AVP of Transplant Services at Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) and a former transplant administrator/coordinator, knows firsthand how challenging it can be to keep a hospital’s kidney waiting list up-to-date, while juggling multiple priorities. Currently, transplant professionals can generate waiting list reports in UNet to help them with this burdensome task, but these reports are not easy to find or use.

Among adult kidney transplant recipients, non-adherence to immunosuppressive medications is the leading predictor of poor outcomes, including rejection, kidney loss, and death. An alarming one-third of kidney transplant patients experience medication non-adherence even though the problem is preventable. Existing adherence interventions have proven marginally effective for those with acute and chronic illnesses and ineffective for adult kidney transplant recipients.

Disparities in outcomes for African American kidney transplant recipients have persisted for 40 years without a comprehensive analysis of evolving trends in the risks associated with this disparity. Here we analyzed U.S. transplant registry data, which included adult Caucasian or AA solitary kidney recipients undergoing transplantation between 1990 and 2009 comprising 202,085 transplantations.

Medication regimen complexity describes multiple characteristics of a patient’s prescribed drug regimen. Heart transplant recipients must comply with a lifelong regimen that consists of numerous medications. However, a systematic assessment of medication regimen complexity over time has not been conducted in this, or any other, transplant population.

Primary graft dysfunction (PGD) is a principal cause of early morbidity and mortality after lung transplantation, but its pathogenic mechanisms are not fully clarified. Thus far, studies using standard clinical assays have not linked microbial factors to PGD. We previously used comprehensive metagenomic methods to characterize viruses in lung allografts greater than 1 month post-transplant and found that levels of Anellovirus, mainly Torque teno viruses (TTV), were significantly higher than in non-transplant healthy controls.

Liver Transplantation
Recurrence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) after liver transplantation (LT) can rapidly lead to liver graft cirrhosis and, therefore, graft failure and retransplantation or death. The aim of the present study was to assess efficacy and tolerance of sofosbuvir (SOF)–based regimens for the treatment of HCV recurrence in patients with severe fibrosis after LT. The Compassionate Use of Protease Inhibitors in Viral C Liver Transplantation (CULPIT) study is a prospective multicenter cohort including patients with HCV recurrence following LT treated with second generation direct antivirals.
